(HAZELWOOD, Mo., Nov. 17) – The McKendree University men's D3 hockey team fell to Washington University in St. Louis 3-1 late Friday night.
McKendree moves to 4-5 overall with the loss.
The Bears struck first with a goal with three minutes left in the first period. McKendree outshot Washington in the opening period, 15-13 but were unable to find the back of the net and would trail 1-0 heading into the first intermission.
The Bearcats would once again outshoot the Bears in the second period but couldn't take advantage of the opportunities as Washington would extend their lead to 3-0. Sophomore
Derek Northrop (St. Louis, MO/De Smet Jesuit High School) would find the back of the net with help from fellow sophomores
Garrett Poole (Columbia, IL/Columbia High School) and
Nick Nelson (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell High School). McKendree was unable to mount the comeback and despite outshooting the Bears 45-41.
Freshman goaltender
Joey Bernardini (Chesterfield, MO/Christian Brothers College High School) stopped 38/41 shots, good for a .926 save percentage.
The Bearcats will look for a series split Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. against Washington University in St. Louis.
