McKendree Readies for Final GLVC Tournament Push at Missouri S&T, Quincy

(LEBANON, Ill., Feb. 21)--
The McKendree University women's basketball team will hit the road to close out the 2017-18 regular season with two games this week. The Bearcats will travel to Rolla, Mo., for a Thursday evening contest at Missouri S&T. McKendree will then play its regular-season finale Saturday afternoon at Quincy University.

McKendree will be making its final case for a spot in the field for the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament to be held March 1-4 in Edwardsville, Ill. The Bearcats are 10-13 on the year and hold a 6-10 record in GLVC play. Entering this last week of GLVC regular-season action, McKendree sits in the No. 9 spot in the inaugural Point Ranking System that will determine the eight teams to earn a spot in the GLVC Tournament field. On Saturday, McKendree collected a big victory with a 67-56 triumph at Maryville University. The Bearcats went 18-of-19 from the free throw line against the Saints (94.7 percent), including a perfect 10-for-10 in the fourth quarter. McKendree also held a 35-26 edge in rebounding in closing out a two-game season sweep of Maryville. Sydney Diekhoff, making her first collegiate start, scored a game-high 19 points for the Bearcats, while Jordan Heberg added 16 points and five assists. The win was the 10th of the season for McKendree, giving the Bearcats three straight double-digit win campaigns under third-year head coach Kari Kerkhoff. 

Heberg is the leading scorer on the season for McKendree at 12.7 PPG. Diekhoff, however, has the highest scoring average in GLVC games for the Bearcats at 13.3 PPG. Jordan Morton continues to rank among the GLVC top 10 in rebounding as she sits ninth overall at 6.9 RPG. Callie Pohlman continues to top the squad for McKendree with 71 assists and 38 steals. 

As a team, McKendree has moved into fourth in the GLVC in rebounding at 38 RPG. The Bearcats are tied for fourth in the conference in rebounding margin at +5.0 RPG. In addition, McKendree holds down the No. 5 spot in the league in blocked shots per game at 3.0. 

Qualifiers and pairings for the 2018 GLVC Women's Basketball Tournament will be announced Saturday evening by the conference office. The information will also be available online at www.glvcsports.com. 

ABOUT MISSOURI S&T
The Miners are 8-16 overall and 3-13 in GLVC play. Missouri S&T has dropped its last five games, including an 87-80 setback Saturday at home against Lewis University. Janie Arand netted a team-leading 22 points and added five assists against the Flyers. Joe'l Bland helped out with 18 points and a game-high four steals. 

Arand leads Missouri S&T in scoring this season at 15.7 PPG. Arand is also shooting 89.7 percent from the free throw line, which is fourth in the GLVC. Maddie Raley is also averaging in double digits for the Miners at 13.1 PPG. Bria Pierce, who is third on the Missouri S&T squad in scoring, is the team's leading rebounder at 6.4 RPG. 

In the lone meeting between the two teams during the 2016-17 season, Missouri S&T pulled away in the fourth quarter to notch a 74-66 triumph over McKendree. Jordan Heberg and Megan Jensen led a balanced offensive attack for the Bearcats with 12 points each, while Jensen grabbed a game-high seven rebounds in the effort. Raetchel Gray led Missouri S&T with 17 points, six rebounds and four assists. 

ABOUT QUINCY
The Hawks enter the week with a season record of 8-17 and a 4-12 ledger in the GLVC. Quincy will play Thursday night at the University of Missouri-St. Louis before hosting McKendree on Saturday. The Hawks have lost five of their last six outings, including last Thursday's 73-64 defeate at the hands of the University of Illinois Springfield. Anika Webster dropped in a team-best 22 points at UIS, while Aleksandra Petrovic also reached double figures in the scoring column with 10 points. Julia Ruzevich grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds against the Prairie Stars.

Webster has shown the way offensively all season long for Quincy as she is averaging 17.1 PPG. Webster ranks fifth in the GLVC in scoring entering the final week of regular-season play. Webster is also posting a team-leading 5.1 rebounds per outing. Michaela Gronewold has dished out a team-high 67 assists for the Hawks in 2017-18. 

McKendree won the first meeting this season with Quincy, 55-44, back on Jan. 18 at the Harry M. Statham Sports Center. The Bearcats limited the Hawks to just 29.2 percent shooting in the first half and forced 19 turnovers in the effort. Madison Hart and Jordan Heberg each scored 12 points to lead McKendree, while Sydney Diekhoff added 11 points. Jordan Morton pulled down a game-high nine rebounds for the Bearcats. Anika Webster was the lone Quincy player to score in double figures with 13 points.
