(LEBANON, Ill., Feb. 2) – The McKendree University men's D3 hockey team defeated Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville by a final score of 5-0.
The Bearcats improve to 16-3 on the season, earning their third victory over the Cougars this season.
McKendree opened the scoring with just 1:11 remaining in the first period when senior defenseman Brent Feltes beat the Cougars goaltender on a pass from senior forward Garrett Kellam. The Bearcats struck three times in the second period with senior defenseman Ethan Gremminger striking first just 1:45 into the period. Freshman defenseman Jacob Scrum lit the lamp halfway through the second period with freshman forward Derek Northrop adding the assist. Graduate student Brett Maggio capped off the scoring in the period on an unassisted effort to give the Bearcats a 4-0 lead. Freshman forward Nick Nelson scored the only goal in the third period with just 1:15 to play, to give McKendree the 5-0 win over SIUE.
Junior goaltender Zach Allen recorded his second shutout of the season, turning aside all 21 shots on goal. The Bearcats are back in action on Saturday at 4:45 p.m. against SIUE for Mckendree senior day.
