McKendree sits in the thick of the race for a GLVC Tournament berth heading into the final three weeks of the regular season. The Bearcats are 9-10 overall and 5-7 in conference play. McKendree is currently in a ties for seventh place with Truman State University in the GLVC Point Ranking System, which helps determine the eight teams who will compete at the league's post-season tournament to be held March 1-4 at the Vadalabene Center in Edwardsville, Ill. Thursday's opponent -- Bellarmine -- is fifth in the 15-team ranking, while Rockhurst is right behind both McKendree and Truman State in the No. 9 spot.
The Bearcats are coming off a 1-1 road trip last week, which included a key 63-53 win last Thursday at the University of Indianapolis. Sydney Diekhoff added another pair of double-digit efforts last week, giving her five straight games with at least 10 points. In addition, Diekhoff has become the Bearcats' leading scorer in GLVC games at 12.8 PPG. She leads McKendree with 37 three-point field goals and is now eighth in the conference in three-pointers per game. Jordan Heberg has maintained her overall team lead in scoring at 12.2 PPG.
Saturday's game will mark Senior Day for the McKendree women's basketball program. Prior to tip-off, the Bearcats will honor
Abby Smith (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) and
Shauniera Wilson (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) in a special ceremony. Smith has been part of the McKendree program for the last five seasons, while Wilson has been a four-year contributor for the Bearcats.
Next Thursday, Feb. 15, McKendree will play its final home game of the 2017-18 regular season at the Statham Center against the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Entering the Bellarmine game, the Bearcats are 6-3 inside the Statham Center, and are 3-3 against GLVC foes.
ABOUT BELLARMINE
The Knights are 13-9 overall and 8-5 in GLVC action. Bellarmine has won five of its last six games, including a 91-44 rout of the University of Illinois Springfield last Saturday at home. Raven Merriweather leads the Knights in scoring at 18.1 PPG, which is also good for third in the GLVC. Merriweather is also the second-leading free throw shooter in the GLVC at 89.5 percent. She also paces the squad in rebounding at 6.2 RPG along with 48 steals. Mikayla Berry (10.9 PPG) and Beth Bowers (10.6 PPG) also average in double figures for Bellarmine.
In 2016-17, McKendree and Bellarmine met twice on the basketball court, with the Knights sweeping the season series. Bellarmine posted a 50-37 win at the Statham Center on Dec. 3, 2016 before completing the sweep with an 80-69 triumph on Feb. 16, 2017 in Louisville, Ky. Jordan Heberg was the lone McKendree player to score in double digits in each game as she averaged 14 PPG against the Knights last season.
ABOUT ROCKHURST
The Hawks are 9-11 overall and 5-7 in the GLVC heading into a Thursday contest at home against Drury University. Rockhurst has dropped four of its last six games but managed to post a 54-48 a win last Saturday at Truman State. The Hawks put together a huge fourth-quarter comeback at Truman State, scoring 31 points over the final 10 minutes. Jillian Myers helped lead the way with 16 points while Madeline Ronshausen added 11 points in the effort.
Ronshausen leads the Hawks in scoring at 15.5 PPG. She is currently eighth in the GLVC in scoring. Myers is the only other Rockhurst player scoring in double figures at 12.7 PPG, while she has dished out 81 assists and is third in the GLVC in assists per contest at 4.1 APG. Myers is also second in the conference in steals per game at 2.8 per outing. Kaci German shows the way in rebounding at 5.2 RPG.
In the last meeting between McKendree and Rockhurst on Jan. 12, 2017 in Kansas City, Mo., the host Hawks built an early lead on their way to a 70-60 win. Jordan Morton had 11 points and eight rebounds in the contest for the Bearcats.
