(CORAL RIDGE, Iowa, Nov. 16) – The McKendree University men's D2 hockey team was swept by the University of Iowa on Saturday night with a 7-5 loss. Five different Bearcats registered goals for McKendree.
The Bearcats fall to 4-7-1 overall and 2-7-1 in Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association (MACHA) play.
Iowa opened the game with four consecutive goals to take a 4-0 lead. Sophomore
Cayden Brilley (Decatur, IL/St. Teresa) broke through with six minutes left in the game on an unassisted goal. The Hawkeyes carried a 4-1 lead into the second period.
The Hawkeyes continued their early period scoring with three goals in the second period before the Bearcats could find the back of the net. Junior
Adam Dempski (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell North HS) scored with help from freshman
Noah Scrum (Maryville, IL/Collinsville High School) to answer. After two periods of play, Iowa led 7-2.
The Bearcats held Iowa scoreless in the final period in an attempted comeback. Juniors
Garrett Poole (Columbia, IL/Columbia High School),
Nick Nelson (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell High School), and
Christian Blandina (Glen Carbon, IL/Edwardsville High School) scored in the period but McKendree fell short 7-5. Senior
Dmytro Golovko (Kiev, Ukraine/Nashua Christian Academy), juniors
Tyler Estermyer (Plano, TX/East Lake High School),
Wolfgang Davis (Langdon, ND/Billings Bulls NA3HL), and Scrum assisted on the goals.
McKendree will be back at the rink next weekend, Nov. 22-23 at Maryville University.
