(CHESTERFIELD, Mo., Nov. 23) – The McKendree University men's D2 hockey team completed the sweep of Maryville University on Saturday night with a 4-3 shootout victory.
The Bearcats advance to 6-8 overall on the season. McKendree will be back at the rink on Dec. 6-7 as they travel to Illinois State.
Junior
Adam Dempski (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell North HS) put the Bearcats ahead 12 minutes into the opening period, scoring an unassisted goal. McKendree carried a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Maryville evened the game at one quickly into the second period. Shortly after, the Saints took the lead but junior
Christian Blandina (Glen Carbon, IL/Edwardsville High School) countered back with help from junior
Derek Northrop (St. Louis, MO/De Smet Jesuit High School) and sophomore
Cayden Brilley (Decatur, IL/St. Teresa) to make the score 2-2 after the second period.
Midway through the final period, the Saints regained the lead, going up 3-2. With four minutes remaining in the game, freshman
Noah Scrum (Maryville, IL/Collinsville High School) tied the game with assists from Blandina and sophomore
Trevor Wolf (Wellington, FL/Wellington High School). After three periods of play, the two teams headed into overtime tied at three.
Neither team found the back of the net in overtime, sending the game to a shootout. McKendree would edge out the Saints to capture a 4-3 victory, completing the second season sweep of Maryville.
