Women's Swimming and Diving Wins Eight Events in Home Dual Meet Against No. 16 Delta State

Sonnenberg Wins Four Events, Gubera Qualifies for NCAA's in 1-Meter Diving

O'FALLON, Ill. – The McKendree University women's swimming and diving team won eight events, including sweeping both relays and the diving competition at Saturday's dual meet against 16th-ranked Delta State at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex Pool.
 
The Lady Statesmen won the dual meet by a score of 161.50-136.50 over the 24th-ranked Bearcats.
 
In Saturday's meet, four Bearcat swimmers and divers won multiple events, including freshman Karley Sonnenberg (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) winning four events. In addition, the Bearcats turned in two NCAA 'B' qualifying times and sophomore Regan Gubera (Jamestown, Ind./Western Boone) earning an NCAA automatic qualifying mark in 1-meter diving.
 
Along with Sonnenberg and Gubera, the other Bearcats to win multiple events on Saturday were freshman Aurora Abbruscato (Reggio Emilia, Italy/I.I.S. Blaise Pascal) and freshman Sarah Gromley (Las Cruces, N.M./Las Cruces).
 
Sonnenberg's four event wins came in the 50 freestyle (23.93), 100 freestyle (52.04) and she was on McKendree's two winning relay teams as she was the anchor on the 200 medley relay team that posted a time of 1:48.37 and was the lead leg on the 200 freestyle relay team that posted a time of 1:36.92. Her times in the 50 and 100 freestyles were both NCAA 'B' qualifying times.
 
Abbrusscato's two wins came in the 200 medley relay as she swam the third leg and in the 200 freestyle relay as she swam the anchor leg. Additionally, she was second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.59.
 
Gromley's two wins came in the 200 freestyle relay and the 200 freestyle as she recorded a time of 1:58.64. Gromley defeated her teammate, graduate student Molly Smalley (Windhoek, Namibia/Plymouth College) in the event as Smalley was second with a time of 1:59.73.
 
Gubera recorded an NCAA automatic qualifying mark in 1-meter diving with a score of 261.30 and she also won the 3-meter diving competition with a score of 238.34.
 
McKendree's other individual event win came in the 400 IM as senior Hallie Dixon (Jeffersonville, Ind./Jeffersonville) recorded a first place time of 4:40.76.
 
The other members of the 200 medley relay besides Abbruscato and Sonnenberg were freshman Caitlyn Sligh (Tomball, Texas/Tomball Memorial) and junior Grace Credit (La Grange Highlands, Ill./Lyons Township).
 
Meanwhile, the other members of the 200 freestyle relay team besides Sonnenberg, Gromley and Abbruscato was senior Haley Rey (Columbia, Ill./Columbia).
 
The Bearcats will return to action next Saturday, Oct. 30 as they host double meet at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex against Maryville University and Illinois State University.
