O'FALLON, Ill. – The McKendree University women's swimming and diving team continued its 2021-22 dual meet season here Saturday afternoon as the 24th-ranked Bearcats picked up a 216-49 win over Maryville University and fell 188-108 to NCAA Division I Illinois State University at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex Pool.
McKendree won three of the 14 individual events and took home first place in both the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relays.
For the third consecutive dual meet, the big winner for the Bearcats on Saturday was freshman
Karley Sonnenberg (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North), who won a total of four events, including being on both McKendree's winning relay teams. Over her last three meets, Sonnenberg, who was named this week's PNC GLVC Women's Athlete of the Year, has won a total of 11 events.
In addition to Sonnenberg's four event wins, another freshman,
Aurora Abbruscato (Reggio Emilia, Italy/I.I.S. Blaise Pascal) took home first place in the 100 butterfly and was on both of McK's winning relay teams as she won three events.
The Bearcats started Saturday's meet by winning the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:47.50 to win by two seconds over Illinois State (1:49.50). The members of McKendree's relay team were senior

Grace Credit (La Grange Highlands, Ill./Lyons Township), Abbruscato and Sonnenberg.
Along with placing first, McKendree's 'B' relay team placed fourth with a time of 1:52.28. The members of the 'B' relay team were freshman
Caitlyn Sligh (Tomball, Texas/Tomball Memorial), freshman
Presley Heitzmann (Magnolia, Texas/Magnolia), senior
Haley Rey (Columbia, Ill./Columbia) and sophomore
Alexis Kachkin (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South).
McKendree's next event win came in the 50 freestyle as the Bearcats went first, second and third in the event as Sonnenberg took home first place with an NCAA 'B' time of 23.93. Along with Sonnenberg, Abbruscato was second with a time of 25.02 and freshman
Sarah Gromley (Las Cruces, N.M./Las Cruces) was third with a time of 25.04.
In the 1-meter diving competition, senior
Lilia de Oliveira Pelaez (Ile Perrot, Quebec/New Mexico State) was third with a score of 229.11, while sophomore
Regan Gubera (Jamestown, Ind./Western Boone) was fourth with a score of 227.09 and junior
Andrea Menard-Cordoba (Montreal, Quebec/College St. Ann) was seventh with a score of 171.59.
Sonnenberg earned her third win of the day in the 100 freestyle with an NCAA 'B' time of 52.10. Gromley, Kachkin, sophomore
Hope Euler (Bentonville, Ark./Bentonville West) were fourth, fifth, and sixth in the event respectively.
Abbruscato was the next individual event winner for the Bearcats as she took home first place in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.63.
The Bearcats went third, fifth and tied for sixth in the 3-meter diving competition as de Oliveira Pelaez was third with a score of 245.85, while Gubera was fifth with a score of 216.82 and Menard Cordoba tied for sixth with a score of 199.57.
McKendree's final win came in the 200 freestyle relay as the Bearcats posted a first place time of 1:37.19. The members of the relay team were Sonnenberg, Rey, Gromley and Abbruscato. Along with its 'A' relay team, the 'B' and 'C' relay teams went fourth and fifth with times of 1:41.14 and 1:43.96 respectively.
The Bearcats will return to action next Friday, Nov. 5 as they travel to Indianapolis, Ind., for a 12 p.m. CT dual meet against No. 1 ranked University of Indianapolis.
