PITTSBURG, Kan. - The McKendree University's men's and women's track and field teams opened their indoor season here Saturday at the Crimson and Gold Invitational held at the Robert W. Plaster Center and hosted by Pittsburg State University.
Between the men and women's teams, the Bearcats recorded five top eight finishes with two Bearcats recording fifth-place finishes.
On the women's side, junior sprinter Sanique Rose (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Iowa Western CC) was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 17-11.5 (5.47 meters) and was seventh in the 60-meter dash with an NCAA Division II provisional time of 7.67 seconds.
In addition to Rose, junior Ndia Johnson (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) was fifth in the weight throw with her top throw being 16.62 meters (54-6.5) and sophomore Kiara Spates (Markham, Ill./Thornton Township) was 16th in the triple jump with a leap of 10.50 meters (34-5.50) and 31st in the long jump with a jump of 4.61 meters (15-1.50).
Meanwhile, on the men's side, sophomore sprinter Malachi Carroll (Omaha, Neb./Iowa Western CC) placed sixth in the 60-meter dash with an NCAA Division II provisional time of 6.77 seconds. Carroll also placed seventh in the 200-meter dash running a time of 21.93 seconds, which was 0.8 hundredths of a second off his personal best time of 21.85.
Senior Dontea Jones (Centralia, Ill./Centralia) recorded a sixth place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 13.48 meters (44-2.75) and was 27th in the long jump with a leap of 6.09 meters (19-11.75).
The Bearcats will return to action next Friday, Dec. 10 as they compete at the Hoosier Open hosted by Indiana University, followed by a meet the next day on Saturday, Dec. 11 at the UIndy Winter Break Meet hosted by the University of Indianapolis.
