Softball's Tournament Run Comes To An End With Losses To UIndy In Championship Game

The McKendree University softball team's run in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament came to an end with two losses to the University of Indianapolis on Sunday.

The Bearcats lost the first game 5-3 and the second game 16-2 in a five-inning mercy rule.

Game One

The Bearcats came out aggressive on offense with a Shelby Summer two-run double scoring Miranda Gajewski and Jenny Homann.

After UIndy tied the game at two in the bottom of the third inning, Kelsey Sachs would score off a throwing error to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth.

UIndy would respond with a go-ahead two-run homerun, followed by an addition run scored in the bottom of the sixth to secure the win.

Ellie Quaethem started on the mound for the Bearcats. She pitched in six innings, gave up five runs (four earned) off six hits and struck out seven batters. Her record fell to 12-7.

Game Two

UIndy would put up 11 runs in the top of the first inning and would not look back after.

The Bearcats put up a fight scoring two runs off fielders' choices, but the Greyhounds offense would be too much for the Bearcats pitching and defense.

Miranda Gajewski started on the mound for the Bearcats. She pitched in 2/3 inning, gave up nine runs (four earned) off seven hits. Her record fell to 12-5.

McKenzie Pirtle pitched in the game's final 4 1/3 innings. She gave up seven runs off 11 hits.

Coaches Quote

"Today's outcome wasn't what we wanted, but I'm so proud of the fight and heart this team played with, not just today but all season. They are a special group and making it to the championship game for the first time in program history is something to be very proud of," head coach Ashley Fleming said.
