O'FALLON, Ill. – The McKendree University women's swimming and diving team picked up a 150-100 win here Friday afternoon over the University of Missouri-St. Louis in a dual meet on Senior Day at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex Pool.
Prior to Friday's meet, the 16th-ranked Bearcats honored its five seniors in a pre-meet ceremony. The seniors recognized were
Camryn Anderson (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore), senior
Lilia de Oliveira Pelaez (Ile Perrot, Quebec/New Mexico State),
Hallie Dixon (Jeffersonville, Ind./Jeffersonville),
Haley Rey (Columbia, Ill./Columbia) and
Abigail Rumpp (Knoxville, Tenn./L&N STEM Academy).
In Friday's meet, four Bearcat swimmers and divers won multiple events, including freshman
Karley Sonnenberg (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) winning three events, while Dixon, sophomore
Regan Gubera (Jamestown, Ind./Western Boone) and graduate student
Molly Smalley (Windhoek, Namibia/Plymouth College) won two events each as the Bearcats won nine of the 16 events at the meet.
Sonnenberg's three wins came in two individual events as she recorded a time of 23.70 to finish first in the 50 freestyle and posted a winning time of 52.44 in the 100 freestyle.
In addition to her two individual wins, Sonnenberg, who was named this week's PNC GLVC Women's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week, was the anchor on the first place winning 200 medley relay team that posted a time of 1:48.33. Other members on the winning 400 medley relay team were Rumpp, junior
Grace Credit (La Grange Highlands, Ill./Lyons Township) and freshman
Aurora Abbruscato (Reggio Emilia, Italy/I.I.S. Blaise Pascal).
Gubera's swept both diving events as she recorded a season best score of 422.24 in 1-meter diving and also posted a season best mark of 257.25 in 3-meter diving. In addition to Gubera, de Oliveira Pelaez was second in both diving events as she recorded a score of 377.46 in 1-meter diving and a score of 242.17 in 3-meter diving.
Dixon's two wins came in the 1,000 freestyle as she swam a time of 10:58.26 and the 400 IM as she recorded a time of 4:40.86.
Smalley's wins on Friday came in the 200 freestyle as she posted a time of 1:59.91 and the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:27.80.
McKendree's other individual event win came in the 200 breaststroke as freshman
Presley Heitzmann (Magnolia, Texas/Magnolia) recorded a time of 2:30.71. The win by Heitzmann was the first of her Bearcat career.
Along with Sonnenberg's win in the 100 freestyle, the Bearcats went second, third, fourth and seventh in the event as freshman
Sarah Gromley (Las Cruces, N.M./Las Cruces) was second (54.74), sophomore
Alexis Kachkin (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) was third (55.11), junior
Emily Drabick (Barto, Pa./Florida Southern) was fourth (55.73) and sophomore
Hope Euler (Bentonville, Ark./Bentonville West) was seventh (56.62).
Gromley was also second in the 200 (2:00.93) and 100 freestyle (54.74), while Drabick (1:08.56), Credit (1:09.14) and Heitzmann (1:09.31) were second, third and fourth respectively in the 100 breaststroke and Credit was second in the 200 breaststroke (2:31.48).
Sophomore
Vanda Voroshazy (Herceghalom, Hungary/Saint Joseph) recorded two second place finishes as she was second in the 100 butterfly (1:00.24) and the mixed 200 butterfly (2:14.47).
McKendree will close out the regular season portion of its 2021-22 schedule on Saturday, Jan. 22 as they host 18th-ranked University of Missouri in a 2 p.m. dual meet at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex Pool.
