O'FALLON, Ill. – The McKendree University women's swimming & diving team opened its 2022-23 dual meet schedule here Friday afternoon by falling 229-69 to NCAA Division I Southern Illinois University at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex.
In Friday's meet, the Bearcats won one event as freshman
Ana Cecilia Carvalho (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Loyola) took home first place in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:25.32. In addition, the Bearcats finished in the Top 3 in eight other events.
Along with her first place in the 1,000 freestyle, Carvalho also placed second in the 500 freestyle with an NCAA 'B' time of 5:03.28 and was third in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:06.68 in her first collegiate meet.
McKendree's other second place finishes came in the 100 freestyle as
McKenzie Fazio (Eagle River, Alaska/Eagle River) as she recorded a time of 53.03, while the 400 freestyle relay team swam a second place time of 3:33.97. The members of the 400 free relay team were Fazio, freshman
Jocelyn Zgola (Milwaukee, Wis./Greendale), junior
Alexis Kachkin (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) and fifth-year senior
Abigail Rumpp (Knoxville, Tenn./L&N STEM Academy).
The Bearcats' third place finishes came in the 1,000 freestyle as freshman
Natalia Kralova (Poprad, Slovakia/Gymnasium Ivana Horvatha) was third with a time of 10:47.51, 200 freestyle as Zgola recorded a time of 1:54.50, while sophomore
Caitlyn Sligh (Tomball, Texas/Tomball Memorial) placed third in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:12.11, freshman
Keianna Moss (Nassau, Bahamas/Focus Point Academy) was third in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.57 and the 200 medley relay team was third with a time of 1:49.04. The members of the team were Moss, senior
Grace Credit (La Grange Highlands, Ill./Lyons Township), sophomore
Aurora Abbruscato (Reggio Emilia, Italy/I.I.S. Blaise Pascal) and sophomore
Karley Sonnenberg (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North).
McKendree opened the meet against the Salukis by finishing third, fourth and sixth in the 200-medley relay as along with the 'A' Team's time of 1:49.04, the 'B' Team was fourth with a time of 1:49.49 and the 'C' Team was sixth with a time of 1:53.79.
Following a first and third place finish in the 1,000 freestyle by Carvalho and Kralova, the Bearcats went third, fifth, sixth and seventh in the 200 freestyle as along with Zgola, Fazio was fifth with a time of 1:55.27, while sophomore
Sarah Gormley (Las Cruces, N.M./Las Cruces) was sixth with a time of 1:59.28 and freshman
Terrah DeLorimiere (Lubbock, Texas/Coronado) was seventh with a time of 2:05.57.
Sligh and Moss each scored in the 100 backstroke as they went fourth (59.91) and fifth (59.94) respectively.
Credit and freshman
Rylee Sitton (Troy, Ill./Triad) scored in the 100 breaststroke as they went fifth (1:07.37) and sixth (1:07.63) in the event.
Following Carvalho's third place finish in the 200 butterfly, Abbruscato and Kachkin scored in the 50 freestyle as Abbruscato was sixth with a time of 24.55 and Kachkin was seventh with a time of 24.62.
The Bearcats also scored in both 1-meter and 3-meter diving as senior Andrea Menard-Cordoba (Montreal, Quebec/College St. Ann) and freshman
Taylor Seibert (Plainwell, Mich./Plainwell) were fourth (232.50) and sixth (205.80) in 1-meter diving, while Seibert was fourth (208.20) and Menard-Cordoba (189.38) was sixth in 3-meter diving.
Along with Fazio and Zgola's second and third place finishes in the 100 freestyle, Kachkin also scored in the event with a time of 53.98.
Sligh and sophomore
Ana Radulovic (Belgrade, Serbia/Sportska Gimnazija) were second and fourth in the 200 backstroke ass Radulovic recorded a time of 2:18.40.
Sitton (2:29.32) and Credit (2:30.39) were fifth and sixth in the 200 breaststroke.
Along with Carvalho's 'B' time in the 500 freestyle, Kralova was fifth with a time of 5:14.19.
In the 100 butterfly, Moss was third and Fazio was fourth with a time of 58.77, while Gormley and Sitton scored in the 200 individual medley as they were fourth (2:11.09) and ninth (2:16.42).
The final event of the day was the 400 freestyle relay as along with a second place finish by the 'A' relay team, the 'B' team of Abbruscato, Zgola, Kachkin and Rumpp were fourth with a time of 3:39.91 and the 'C' team of DeLorimiere, Radulovic, senior
Emily Drabick (Barto, Pa./Florida Southern) and Credit was sixth with a time of 3:50.81.
McKendree will return to the pool in a little less than 24 hours as they travel to Normal, Ill., for a 1 p.m. dual meet at Illinois State University.
