Jones Leads Men's Wrestling at Jim Koch Open; Bearcats Place Nine Individually

Bearcats face No.11 UW-Parkside in non-conf. dual next Sunday

KENOSHA, Wis. - No.13 McKendree University men's wrestling wrapped up another early-season tournament on Saturday evening with nine placers overall in the one-day tournament. McKendree was led by senior Joshua Jones, who grabbed a second-place finish in his 184lb class. Redshirt freshman Zeke Waltz was next up for the Bearcats, finishing third with four-straight wins to end his day. The Bearcats will be back for their second dual of the season next weekend, December 11, against No.11 UW-Parkside in Madison, Wisconsin, during a three-division showcase.

184 CLASS
#10 Jones, a senior out of Chicago Heights, Illinois, claimed a second place finish at the Jim Koch Open on Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 record on the day. The senior opened with a bye round before winning his first official matchup with a pin at the one minute mark over Oscar Villalobos of Joliet JC. Following the pinfall victory, Jones then put up a 3-1 decision win against Joey Williams of GLVC-foe Maryville. The first place battle was between Jones and #4 in the 184lb class, Reece Worachek. The bout between Jones and Worachek went to TB-1, as the Parkside wrestler bested Jones, 3-2.

174 CLASS
Waltz, a Jerseyville, Illinois-native, performed well to capture his third-place finish at the open tournament, winning four-straight matches for the placement. Waltz opened with a bye and then a strong 15-5 major in his first matchup against Maryville's Lance Hymer. The redshirt freshman then faced-off against Wisconsin's Graham Calhoun, who beat out Waltz by 7-5 decision victory. Following the defeat, Waltz went onto the wrestle-back end of the bracket, where he rattled-off four wins in a row to claim third. He first defeated freshman teammate Brandon Lloyd by 10-1 major and then beat Parkside's Brody Hemauer on 5-1 decision. In the consolation semifinal, Waltz earned his third major of the day over Bret Heil (Maryville) on 8-0 count. In the third-place bout, the redshirt freshman beat Parkside's Crosby Schlosser on a 6-5 decision.
