INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The McKendree University men's and women's track and field programs competed in this weekend's 2022 Great Lakes Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships held at the Athletics & Recreation Center (ARC) on the campus of the University of Indianapolis.
Both Bearcat teams finished 10th at this year's championships with the men finishing in a tie for 10th of 14 teams with 18 points, while the women recorded 10 points to finish 10th out of 13th teams.
Lindenwood captured its first-ever GLVC title in men's track and field as the Lions scored 121.50 points, while Lewis was second with 112 points for the men. On the women's side, Lewis repeats as the GLVC champion as the Flyers tallied 173.50 and UIndy was second with 161.50 points.
On the men's side, the Bearcats recorded four top eight finishes with sophomore sprinter Malachi Carroll (Omaha, Neb./Iowa Western CC) recording a first place finish and taking home the gold medal in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.91 to record 10 of the Bearcats' 18 points at the meet. Carroll currently has the fourth fastest time in Division II in the 60-meter dash this season as he ran a 6.77 at the Crimson & Gold Invitational.
Senior jumper Dontea Jones (Centralia, Ill,/Centralia) recorded five points as he earned three points with his sixth place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 14.16 meters (46-5.5) and earned two points with his seventh place finish in the long jump with a leap of 6.56 meters (21-6.25). The last Bearcat to score for the men's team was senior jumper/hurdler Johnathan Bumpers (Alton, Ill./Alton) as he recorded three points with sixth place finish in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.44.
On the women's side, the Bearcats recorded two top eight finishes over the two day event as junior thrower Ndia Johnson (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) finished second to earn a silver medal in the weight throw with a personal best throw of 17.81 meters (58-5.25), while the other top eight finish came from junior sprinter Sanique Rose (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Iowa Western CC) as Rose finished seventh in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.89.
At the conclusion of the championship meet, the GLVC handed out its individual award winners and announced the members of the James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Individual Award honorees for both men's and women's track and the receipients named from McKendree for the award was Bumpers for the men and freshman Brianna Sarver (Pana, Ill./Pana) for the women's team.
Carroll and Rose are expected to qualify for this year's NCAA Division II Indoor Track Championships in the 60-meter dash as Carroll currently has the No. 4 ranked time in Division II, while Rose has the No. 7 ranked time in Division II. The Division II Indoor Track Championships are scheduled for March 11-12 at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kan.
The Bearcats will open the 2022 outdoor track and field season on Saturday, March 26 as they travel to Rolla, Mo., to compete at the Miner Invitational.
