INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – McKendree University secured one of four spots in Sunday's match/medal round following its fourth-place finish as a team after 54 holes here Saturday of the 2022 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Golf Championships held at the Broadmoor Country Club.
The Bearcats finished the stroke play portion of the tournament with a 19-over par 883 for 54 holes after shooting a final round on Saturday. Along with its 301 on Saturday, the Bearcats fired rounds of 290 and 292 in Friday's first day of the three-day tournament. It marks just the second time since joining the league in 2013 that McKendree will compete in the match/medal play of the GLVC Championships.
With its fourth-place finish, the Bearcats earned a spot in Sunday's match/medal portion of the tournament to determine a GLVC Team Champion. The Bearcats are the No. 4 seed in the match/medal place and will face No. 1 seeded UMSL on Sunday morning. The other teams competing in the match/medal play on Sunday are No. 2 seeded Indianapolis and No. 3 seeded Southern Indiana.
UMSL finished as the top team in stroke play as the Tritons shot a 54-hole total of 6-under par 858 after carding a final round 287. UMSL opened the tournament with rounds of 286 and 285. UIndy finished in second place with an 8-over par 872 for 54 holes as the Greyhounds shot rounds of 293, 294 and 285 and USI was third with a 16-over 880 after carding rounds of 290, 303 and 287.
Leading the way for the Bearcats after 54 holes was graduate student
Will Postlethwaite (Carlisle, United Kingdom/William Howard School), who carded a three-round total of 1-over par 217 to finish in a five-way tie for sixth place. In Saturday's final round, Postlethwaite shot a 75 after carding back-to-back rounds of 1-under par 71 on Friday. He was second in the field of 65 golfers in pars with 38 and was one of two McKendree golfers to record an eagle.
UMSL's Joel Sylven took home medalist honors at the tournament as he finished the event with a 6-under par score of 210 for 54 holes to win by one shot over runner-up Oliver Mast of UIndy, who carded a 5-under par 211 for 54 holes. Sylven carded rounds of 70-, 67 and 73, while Mast shot rounds of 71, 72 and 68. The other Top 5 individual finishers were Missouri S&T's Carl Miltun, who shot a 3-under 213 after shooting rounds of 69, 72 and 72 and USI's Jason Bannister and UMSL's Reilly Ahearn were fourth overall after shooting 1-under par scores of 215 for 54 holes. Bannister shot rounds of 69, 75 and 71, while Ahearn fired rounds of 74, 72 and 69.
Only five golfers shot par or better on the par-72, 6,904-yard Broadmoor CC course at this year's GLVC Championships.
Junior
Rasmus Nilsson (Stockholm, Sweden/Danderyds Gymnasium) shot a 5-over par 221 to finish in a tie for 12th place. Nilsson followed up his opening day rounds of 74 and 72 by shooting a final round of 75. Nilsson was tied for third at the tournament in par-5 scoring as he played the course's par-5 holes at 6-under par and averaged 4.50 on those holes.
The third counter for the Bearcats was freshman
Fabian Wennerlof (Onsala, Sweden/Katrinelundgymnasiet), who shot a 54-hole total of 222 to finish in a tied for 16th place. Wennerlof shot a final round 76 after carding rounds of 71 and 75 respectively. Wennerlof finished with 32 pars and nine birdies on his scorecard and shot 5-under par on the par-5 holes and averaged 4.58.
Junior
Phasin Vichitcharoenpaisarn (Bangkok, Thailand/The American School of Bangkok) recorded a 20th place finish after carding an 8-over par 224 for 54 holes. Vichitcharoenpaisarn shot a 75 in the final round, after carding a 75 and 74 in Friday's first two rounds. Vichitcharoenpaisarn had 32 pars and was the other Bearcat golfer to record an eagle in the tournament.
The fifth and final golfer for the Bearcats was freshman
Thomas Tollefsen (Tongsberg, Norway/Wang Toppidrett Tonsberg) as he shot a 227 for 54 holes to finish in 29th place overall. Tollefsen carded a final round 78 after shooting rounds of 74 and 75 in Friday's first two rounds.
The start for Sunday's match/medal play are yet to be determined, pending a frost delay in the morning. When the match/medal play begins, UMSL/McKendree will tee off from the No. 1 tee, while UIndy/USI will tee off from No. 10.
