No.17 Women’s Swimming Starts 2025 Triumphant At Home

O'FALLON, Ill. - McKendree Women's swimming defeated the Washington University in Saint Louis Bears by a score of 167-120. 

Starting off the day the Bearcats went 1-2-3 in the 200-yard medley relay. The A team consisting of 5th Year senior Alexis Kachkin, senior Presley Heitzmann, senior Karley Sonnenberg, and freshman Tumi Macdonell took first with a time of 1:46.87. 

Juniors Jocelyn Zgola and Natalia Kralova placed first and second with times of 10:09.69 and 10:19.49 in the 1000-yard freestyle. 

The 200-yard freestyle saw freshmen Luiza Dias and Macdonell placed first and second with times of 1:54.63 and 1:58.08. 

Kachkin led the way in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 59.04 and freshmen Bianka Bukovics placed second in 59.49. Sophomore Helena Kurtz placed third with a time of 1:00.22. 

Junior Rylee Sitton took first place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.75. Heitzmann took second place with a time of 1:08.17, and senior Sarah Gormley took third with 1:08.17. Sitton and Heitzmann took first and second in the 200 breaststroke as well. 

Graduate student Sophia Burwitz placed first in the 200-yard fly with a time of 2:08.61. 

Sonnenberg and Macdonell finished first and second in the 50 yard fly with times of 24.17 and 24.63 respectively. Senior Aurora Abbruscato took third in 24.67. 

Zgola and Kachkin took first and second place in the 100-yard freestyle with times of 52.89 and 53.97. 

Bukovics led the way in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:36.82. 

The 200-yard backstroke saw Dias and Bukovics take first and second with times of 2:07.44 and 2:09.01. 

Kralova took first place in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:17.17. 

Closing out the day Sonnenberg, Macdonell, Zgola, and Kachkin took first place in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:32.43. 

The Bearcats defeated the Bears 187-105, and will jump back in the pool next Fri. Jan. 17-18 in Columbia, Mo. where they will compete against the University of Missouri and Missouri State University.
