(LEBANON, Ill., Sept. 7)—The McKendree University volleyball team dropped a four-set decision Wednesday at home to Maryville University. The visiting Saints won by scores of 25-23, 23-25, 25-22 and 25-16.
Senior right-side hitter Nadia Moore (Cahokia, Ill./Cahokia) (Cahokia, Ill./Cahokia) registered a team-high 14 kills as the Bearcats slipped to 2-4 on the season. McKendree will now fly to San Diego, Calif., this weekend for the Seaside Invitational. The 12-team event, which is hosted by Point Loma Nazarene University, will be staged on Friday and Saturday. The Bearcats will meet Concordia University (Calif.) Friday at 10 a.m. PT before taking on Biola University in the nightcap at 8:30 p.m. PT.
Against Maryville, McKendree dropped the first set before battling back late in the second set to knot the score. With the second set tied at 20-20, Moore registered a kill, followed by a service ace by freshman middle hitter Hilary Richter (Troy, IL/Triad) (Troy, Ill./Triad). The Bearcats never lost the lead in the set as Moore finished off the 25-23 win with another attack.
The teams played back and forth in the third set before Maryville (2-0) took control late and nabbed a come-from-behind win. The Saints dominated play in the fourth and final set to pull out its second match victory in as many nights.
Senior right-side hitter Kaitlyn Kollmann (Collinsville, IL/Metro East Lutheran) (Collinsville, Ill./Metro East Lutheran) added nine kills for McKendree, while senior hitter Melinda Bayer (Collinsville, IL/Triad) (Collinsville, Ill./Triad) chipped in with seven attacks. Richter led all players with eight blocks in the match.
Senior setter Melissa Bayer (Collinsville, IL/Triad) (Collinsville, Ill./Triad) handed out a team-best 17 assists as freshman setter Maggie Mueller (St. Peters, MO/Francis Howell Central) (St. Peters, Mo./Francis Howell Central) posted 15 assists and a team-best 10 digs.
Ashlee Brockenbrough recorded a match-high 19 kills to lead Maryville, while Andi Neff notched 48 assists for the Saints.
