(EVANSVILLE, Ind., Sept. 14)—The McKendree University volleyball team saw its four-match come to an end Friday evening when the Bearcats were swept at the University of Southern Indiana. The host Screaming Eagles took the best-of-five contest by scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-19.
Friday's match marked the Bearcats' first-ever contest in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. McKendree slips to 4-5 overall and will look to bounce back on Saturday when it travels to Owensboro, Ky., for another GLVC match against Kentucky Wesleyan College. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
At Southern Indiana, freshman middle hitter
Lauren Apetz (Glenwood, FL/DeLand) was the lone McKendree player to reach double figures in the kills column with 12. Junior hitter
Meghan Dohogne (Cape Girardeau, MO/Notre Dame Regional) chipped in with nine attacks. Junior setter
Abby Hanger (Belleville, IL/Belleville West) handed out 27 assists, while junior libero
Maddie Kelly (Lake Saint Louis, MO/Timberland) contributed a match-high 21 digs for the Bearcats.
In the first set, Southern Indiana (3-7, 1-0 GLVC) raced to a 6-1 lead before McKendree chipped away at the deficit. The Bearcats pulled within 10-8 following a kill by junior outside hitter
Maureen Nesbit (Belleville, IL/Althoff Catholic). The Screaming Eagles responded by scoring five of the next six points to regain a 15-9 advantage. Southern Indiana built the lead to as many as nine points in cruising to the set victory.
The second set played out in similar fashion, with Southern Indiana grabbing an early lead. McKendree cut the deficit to two points on three different occasions, the last coming at 12-10. But the Screaming Eagles used three consecutive kills by Emily Diedrich and another from Lauren DeShaney as part of a 5-0 run to stretch the margin to 17-10.
McKendree led early in the third set before Southern Indiana ripped off six straight points to that the lead for good at 9-6. The Bearcats' deficit grew to as many as seven points before a service error, consecutive kills from Apetz and a Southern Indiana attack error brought McKendree within 22-19. The Screaming Eagles then sealed the match by scoring the final three points to complete the sweep.
DeShaney led Southern Indiana with a match-high 13 kills, while Fawn Ryan added 12 kills and Diedrich had 10. Jorae Bradbury dished out 43 assists for the Screaming Eagles.
McKendree and Southern Indiana will meet again on Nov. 3 at the Melvin Price Convocation Center in Lebanon.
