McKendree Volleyball Squad Tumbles in Four Sets at Southern Indiana

Box Score (EVANSVILLE, Ind., Oct. 19)—The McKendree University volleyball team was defeated in four sets on Saturday in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at the University of Southern Indiana. The host Screaming Eagles won by scores of 25-17, 29-31, 25-8 and 25-15.
 
McKendree is now 5-15 overall and 3-8 in the GLVC East Division. The Bearcats will step out of conference Tuesday when they travel to St. Louis to face Missouri Baptist University. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
 
Senior outside hitter Maureen Nesbit (Belleville, IL/Althoff Catholic) and sophomore middle hitter Rachel Nelson (Papillion, NE/Papillion-LaVista South) each had 10 kills to lead the way for McKendree. Junior outside hitter Kelsey Johnson (Aviston, IL/Breese Central) chipped in with nine attacks, while Johnson and sophomore right-side hitter Taylor Voss (Breese, IL/Breese Central) posted four assisted blocks each. Freshman setter Breanna Howe (Mt. Pulaski, IL/Mt. Pulaski) handed out a team-leading 18 assists, and senior libero Maddie Kelly (Lake Saint Louis, MO/Timberland) notched 15 digs in the contest for McKendree.
 
Southern Indiana (16-4, 9-2 GLVC) jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first set and never looked back in grabbing an early lead over McKendree. It appeared the Screaming Eagles were primed to take a two-set lead, storming to a 7-2 advantage in the second set. The Bearcats chipped away at the deficit, then used a run of five straight points to tie the contest at 20-20. Nelson and Nesbit provided consecutive kills to help McKendree pull even.
 
The teams battled back and forth, and Southern Indiana took a 29-28 lead and served for the second set win. A kill from freshman outside hitter Bailey Kampwerth (Breese, IL/Mater Dei) knotted the score at 29-29, and Nesbit followed with back-to-back kills to even the match score at 1-1.
 
From there, Southern Indiana took control, cruising to the third set win, then outscoring the Bearcats 9-2 to close the fourth set and bring home the victory.
 
Lauren DeShaney had a match-high 17 kills to pace Southern Indiana, while Jorae Bradbury handed out 47 assists in the contest for the Screaming Eagles.
