Box Score (SOMERS, Wis., Oct. 5)—The McKendree University volleyball team was defeated in four sets at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match Saturday afternoon in Somers, Wis. The host Rangers won by scores of 25-17, 25-13, 21-25 and 27-25.
McKendree is now 3-12 on the year and 1-5 in GLVC play. The Bearcats will return to the Harry M. Statham Sports Center Tuesday for a conference battle against the University of Illinois Springfield. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
At Wisconsin-Parkside, senior outside hitter
Maureen Nesbit (Belleville, IL/Althoff Catholic) and sophomore outside hitter
Hannah Wessel (Waterloo, IL/Gibault Catholic) led a balanced attack with eight kills each. Both also reached double figures in digs as Wessel handled 16 while Nesbit chipped in with 14. A pair of freshman setters added double-doubles for the Bearcats as
Aubry Dickmann (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) notched a team-high 16 assists with 11 digs, and
Breanna Howe (Mt. Pulaski, IL/Mt. Pulaski) posted 15 assists along with 14 digs.
Senior libero
Maddie Kelly (Lake Saint Louis, MO/Timberland) led the back row with 22 digs for the Bearcats.
Wisconsin-Parkside (9-6, 3-3 GLVC) never trailed in taking the first two sets. McKendree grabbed its first lead of the contest at the beginning of the third set thanks to a kill by Wessel. The Bearcats led for most of the contest until the Rangers built a 17-15 lead. McKendree won the next two points to knot the score at 17-17, and the teams traded points before a kill from sophomore middle hitter
Lauren Apetz (Glenwood, FL/DeLand) sparked a run of four consecutive points that pushed the Bearcats to a 23-19 lead on their way to cutting the match deficit to 2-1.
The teams battled back and forth in the fourth set. McKendree trailed 23-20 before the Bearcats ripped off four of the next five points to take a 25-24 lead. McKendree faced match point, but Wisconsin-Parkside fought back to win the final three points and take the match.
Makenzie Fahnestock put down a match-high 12 kills to show the way for the Rangers, while Lauren Hickson dished out a match-high 37 assists in the win.
