(LEBANON, Ill., Nov. 8)--The McKendree University football team will hit the road for the final time in the 2013 season Saturday when the Bearcats travel to Rolla, Mo., to square off against Missouri S & T. Kickoff for the Great Lakes Valley Conference contest is set for 1 p.m. at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
McKendree, now 3-5 on the year and 2-3 in the GLVC, is coming off perhaps its most impressive effort of the season last Saturday, when the Bearcats rolled past Quincy University at Leemon Field, 51-16. Sophomore wide receiver
Cameron James (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) had a big night against the Hawks as he piled up 254 all-purpose yards. James did most of his damage on special teams, returning the opening kickoff 78 yards to set up the Bearcats' first touchdown before fielding a third-quarter punt and racing 64 yards for a score. In addition, James produced a 57-yard run late in the first quarter out of the Wildcat formation. For his efforts, James was selected as the GLVC Special Teams Player of the Week.Â
Sophomore quarterback
Isaac Fisher (Washington, IL/Washington) threw for 240 yards and three touchdowns in the win over Quincy. Fisher boosted his season passing total to 1,607 yards and needs just 102 more to surpass his older brother Austin to become the single-season passing leader in McKendree history.
Isaac Fisher (Washington, IL/Washington) also needs 23 yards become the Bearcats' season leader in total yardage. After becoming the starter at quarterback midway through his freshman season in 2012, Fisher already ranks second on the Bearcats' career list in pass attempts (403), completions (232), yards (2,640) and touchdowns (18). Isaac trails Austin for the top spot in each of the aforementioned categories.
Senior defensive back
Tirell Anderson (Decatur, IL/MacArthur) set a new McKendree single-game record with six pass break-ups against Quincy. Anderson had nine tackles as well. Freshman cornerback
Jabaree Winston (Chicago, IL/Simeon) led a strong defensive effort for the Bearcats' secondary with 10 tackles. As a team, the Bearcats had a season-high five quarterback sacks last Saturday as sophomore defensive lineman
Brett Pearman (Granite City, IL/Granite City) led the way with 2 1/2 on the night. Senior defensive back
Michael Romshek (Gibson City, IL/Gibson City-Melvin Sibley) notched his first two interceptions of the 2013 season versus Quincy.
Three McKendree defenders have recorded at least 50 tackles this season. A pair of sophomore linebackers top the list as
Alec Gerdes (Normal, IL/Normal) has 58 while
George Hill (Chicago Heights, IL/Rich Central) is right behind with 55. Anderson is third on the squad with 50.Â
Missouri S & T brings a 4-5 overall record and 3-2 league mark into Saturday's contest. The Miners were also victorious last Saturday as they registered a 24-6 road win at William Jewell College. It marked the third win in the last four games for Missouri S & T, which is led by first-year head coach Tyler Fenwick. DeSoto Dickson rushed for a game-high 93 yards on 14 carries to pace the Miners, while Zenel Hudson added 77 yards on just nine attempts. Quarterback Peter Simpson was 16-of-31 through the air for 224 yards with two touchdowns. Melvin Stovall had five receptions for 113 yards, including a 35-yard TD grab in the second quarter. Leon Moody also had five catches on the day for the Miners.
Hudson leads Missouri S & T with 520 rushing yards on the season along with six touchdowns. In five games this season, Simpson has completed just 46 percent of his pass attempts for 588 yards with three touchdowns. Stovall has caught a team-leading 54 passes fofr 561 yards with three TDs.
On the defensive side of the ball, Chris Emesih leads the way for Missouri S & T with 77 tackles, including 44 solos. Emesih ranks among the top 10 in the GLVC in tackles per game. Â Mark Hopkins has intercepted four passes, a total that is tied for the GLVC lead. Dan Mauszycki has shown a knack for getting into the opponent's backfield, registering team-high totals of 13 tackles for loss and six quarterback sacks.Â
The teams met for the first time in the modern era of McKendree football last season. On Sept. 15, 2012 in Lebanon, Missouri S & T pulled away to post a 31-0 victory over the Bearcats. McKendree was making its GLVC debut in the contest, which was played under the lights at Leemon Field.
