Jake Kline drove in two runs in game two at Lewis
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (ROMEOVILLE, Ill., March 30)—Host Lewis University completed a four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference Saturday by sweeping a doubleheader against the McKendree University baseball team. The Bearcats were defeated in the opener 11-0 before dropping a 12-5 decision in the nightcap.

McKendree slips to 11-9 overall and 6-6 in the GLVC East Division with the losses on Saturday. The Bearcats will look to bounce back on Tuesday when they visit Bellarmine University for a GLVC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 12 noon ET (11 a.m. CT).

Lewis left-hander Michael Schroeder tossed a three-hit shutout on game one against McKendree. Schroeder did not walk a batter and struck out six as he improved to 3-0 on the year. The Bearcats had three singles off of Schroeder which came off the bats of junior shortstop Tony Kossina (Millstadt, IL/Belleville West), sophomore outfielder Kyle Rutledge (Bloomington, IL/Normal) and sophomore infielder Jake Kline (Carol Stream, IL/Glenbard North).

In game two, Lewis jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning, but McKendree battled back to pull within four runs on two different occasions. The Bearcats broke through in the fourth inning with two runs to trim the deficit to 6-2. Sophomore infielder Pierce Borah (Mt. Vernon, IL/Mt. Vernon) led off the frame with a single and moved to second base on a wild pitch. After a walk to sophomore infielder Jeff Tolliver (Salem, IL/Salem), Kline delivered Borah with an RBI single to get the Bearcats on the scoreboard.

Junior catcher Kolton King (Marion, IL/Marion) closed out the scoring in the fourth inning for McKendree with an RBI double to bring home Tolliver.

Lewis stretched its lead back to 9-2 with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning and two more in the fifth. McKendree answered with a solo home run off the bat of senior first baseman Rob Beatty (Millstadt, IL/Belleville West) in the sixth inning to pull within 9-3. The Bearcats added two more runs in the seventh inning to rally within 9-5. McKendree loaded the bases with one out before Tolliver drew a walk to force home Kossina, who had doubled earlier in the frame. Kline provided the Bearcats' final run with a sacrifice fly to center field.

The Flyers put the game out of reach with a three-run outburst in the bottom of the seventh inning. Lewis held a 13-8 edge in hits in game two.

Kossina and Borah each had two hits in the nightcap for McKendree.
