Box Score 2 (PENSACOLA, Fla., Sept. 7)—The McKendree University volleyball team earned a split of its final two matches of the weekend Saturday at the Hemingway's Invitational in Pensacola, Fla. The two-day tournament was held at the University of West Florida.
The Bearcats rolled to a four-set victory in its first match of the day over Albany State University (25-10, 21-25, 25-14, 25-6) before being swept by the University of Arkansas at Monticello (20-25, 18-25, 22-25) in the finale on Saturday. McKendree is now 1-3 on the season and will be in Warrensburg, Mo., next weekend for the Peggy Martin Challenge at the University of Central Missouri. McKendree will take on host Central Missouri in Friday's opener before meeting Winona State University in the nightcap.
On Saturday, freshman outside hitter
Bailey Kampwerth (Breese, IL/Mater Dei) continued the strong start to her collegiate career with two more double-digit efforts in the kills department. Kampwerth put down a match-high 13 attacks in the Bearcats' victory over Albany State and followed that with 11 kills versus Arkansas-Monticello.
Sophomore outside hitter
Hannah Wessel (Waterloo, IL/Gibault Catholic) added 19 total kills on the day, which included 10 in the Albany State match. Freshman middle hitter
Sophie Fairman (Staunton, IL/Staunton) connected for 11 attacks against Albany State. Freshman setter
Rebecca Nauman (Yorkville, IL/Yorkville) handed out 40 assists in the Bearcats' victory and followed that with 27 in the Arkansas-Monticello contest.
After splitting the first two matches against Albany State, McKendree took control in the third set. The contest was tied 2-2 before the Bearcats reeled off 10 consecutive points to grab a 12-2 advantage. Kampwerth had three kills during the stretch, while sophomore middle hitter
Rachel Nelson (Papillion, NE/Papillion-LaVista South) added two and junior right-side hitter
Kelsey Johnson (Aviston, IL/Breese Central) served up a pair of aces. The Bearcats eventually stretched the margin to 15-4 and cruised to victory in the set.
In the fourth and final set, McKendree jumped out to a 16-2 lead and never looked back. That included a run of 12 straight points.
