(Lebanon, Ill., Jan. 11) – The McKendree University men's volleyball team returns to action this week with a trio of matches in Provo, UT starting Thursday at 7 p.m. MT against No. 4 Brigham Young University. The Bearcats will then tangle with Concordia University Irivine on Friday at Noon MT before wrapping up the weekend Saturday evening with another contest against BYU slated for 7 p.m. MT.
McKendree enters the week with a record of 0-4 after taking on four teams ranked in the top 12 last week that included Pepperdine and Stanford University.
The Bearcats are led by senior opposite
Maalik Walker (Shorewood, IL/Minooka) who has averaged 3.33 kills per set, hitting .300 this season. Junior outside hitter
Nolan Rueter (Burlington, WI/Burlington) is second on the team averaging 2.36 kills to go with 11 digs and seven blocks. Senior middle hitter
Wyatt Patterson (Flossmoor, IL/Homewood-Flossmoor) rounds out the top three attackers for McKendree averaging 2.27, while hitting a robust .647. Patterson also leads the Bearcats in blocks with nine, including three solos. Junior setter
Pasquale Fiduccia (Hanover Park, IL/Glenbard North) has dished out 142 assists averaging 9.47 per set to go with 1.60 digs per set. Sophomore libero
Zach Thompson (Defiance, MO/Francis Howell) leads McKendree from the back row averaging 2.00 digs per set.
ABOUT BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY
The Cougars opened the season 1-1 last week after splitting a pair of matches against a pair of Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association foes in No. 6 Lewis and No. 11 Loyola-Chicago. BYU is coming off a stellar campaign in 2016 as they finished as the national runner up after falling 3-0 to Ohio State in the National Championship. The Cougars are paced by junior opposite Ben Patch who averages 6.00 kills per set on .410 attacking. Senior outside hitter Jake Langlois is second on the team with 3.86 kills on .273 attacking to pair with 1.43 digs. Setter Leo Durkin has dished out 87 assists in a pair of matches averaging 12.43 per set to go with 1.29 digs. Junior middle blocker Price Jarman leads BYU with seven blocks, while freshman libero Mitchel Worthington paces the Cougars in digs at 2.00. Thursday marks the first ever meeting between the two programs and the teams have yet to share a common opponent this season.
ABOUT CONCORIDA UNIVERSITY IRVINE
The Eagles enter the weekend winners of four straight to up their record to 4-3 overall. Concordia is paced by junior outside hitter Jonathan Predney who averages 3.13 kills per set, hitting .323. Sophomore middle blocker Hunter Howell is second on the team at 1.88 kills per set to pair with 21 blocks. Sophomore setter Chandler Gibb leads the team in assists at 7.60 per set to go with 1.44 digs and .44 blocks per set. Junior middle blocker Taylor Falduti leads the Eagles in blocks with 24 and junior libero Jacob Weiser has stuck a team high 40 digs from the back row.
