Women's Volleyball Prepares for Two Key Conference Road Matches

The McKendree University women's volleyball team is set for two Great Lakes Valley Conference contests on the road this weekend. They will match up with the #4 nationally ranked Lewis University Flyers on Friday at 7pm in a battle of GLVC Division leaders. On Saturday, they will continue north to Kenosha for a date with the University of Wisconsin Parkside Rangers on Saturday at 3 pm.

The Bearcats now sit at 19-5 on the season and remain undefeated in conference play at 13-0, following wins against Maryville University and the Missouri St. Louis Tritons over the weekend. McKendree once again received votes in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II poll that came out on Monday afternoon.

Senior Arela Williams picked up her 400th kill of the season against UMSL on Saturday, and has now reached 400 kills in all four of her years with McKendree. She is ranked in the top five nationally in total kills, and is averaging 4.52 per set on the season.

Senior Amanda Geiger is third in the conference in kills per set, putting up an average of 3.8. She is averaging 3.46 digs per set as well, which puts her second on the Bearcats roster in that particular category.

Morgan Melchert is fourth in the GLVC in assists, averaging 10.34 per set. The junior setter is averaging 3.17 digs per set and has collected 47 total blocks. Sophomore Kelly Voss leads the Bearcats in digs, averaging more than four per set.

Senior middle blocker Carissa Lorenz is ranked third in the GLVC in blocks per set, averaging 1.21, and has also put down 97 kills. Another middle for McKendree, sophomore Megan Marks, has contributed 94 total blocks and 118 kills. Freshman Elle Russell is having a solid first year with the Bearcats, compiling 104 kills and 196 digs so far.
 

Lewis University Flyers (23-2, 12-1 GLVC)
Lewis is coming off of a win against the University of Wisconsin Parkside this week, and lead the GLVC East Division. They are currently ranked fourth in the country, and are ranked first in the conference in hitting percentage, blocks, opponent blocks, opponent hitting percentage and opponent kills.

The Flyers have a balanced attack that is led by junior outside hitter Elizabeth Hyland and senior middle hitter Aly Schneider. Hyland, the reigning GLVC Offensive Player of the Week, leads Lewis in kills, averaging 3.76 per set, which places her fourth in the conference. She has also contributed 37 total blocks and 266 digs. Schneider is averaging 2.95 kills per set while hitting .349 and leads her team in blocks, with 94 total.

Red-shirt senior Maddie Seliga is averaging 2.64 kills per set, and has added 198 digs and 44 blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Alexandra Preuss has put down 184 kills and picked up 193 digs. The reigning GLVC Defensive Player of the Week has also compiled 43 total blocks.

Red-shirt junior Abby Becker is ranked second in the GLVC in assists, averaging 11.17 per set. She has also recorded 53 kills and 153 digs on the season. Sophomore Caroline Stefanon is averaging 1.15 total blocks a set, and has put away over 100 kills. Another sophomore, Ronni Katarzynski, leads the Flyers in digs, collecting 343.

McKendree has won its last two matches against the Flyers, including a five-set victory last season in Romeoville.
 

University of Wisconsin Parkside Rangers (12-14, 7-7 GLVC)
The Rangers fell in three sets to the Lewis University Flyers on Tuesday night, and are currently in third place in the GLVC East. They are led by first year head coach Dominic Yoder, who previously spent ten seasons at the helm of Northern Michigan University volleyball.

Wisconsin Parkside has four athletes who are averaging more than two kills per set in freshman outside hitter Rachel Hedman, senior middle blocker Lexi Turek, sophomore right-side hitter Leah Fenske and junior outside hitter Lexie Calloway.

Hedman has also collected 47 digs and 39 total blocks, while Turek leads the Rangers in blocking, with 97 total, and is hitting .316. Fenske has picked up 85 digs and 62 blocks, while Calloway is second for the Rangers in digs, averaging 2.9 per set.

Sophomore libero Annie Leo is in the GLVC top ten in digs, averaging just under five per set, and is first in service aces, with 44. Junior setter Katie Adams has recorded 907 assists, 180 digs and 78 kills this season. Junior middle blocker Elizabeth Mavis has 70 total blocks, for an .83 average of per set.

It will be the ninth meeting between the Bearcats and the Rangers, with McKendree holding a 5-3 advantage in the series.
