Bearcats Prepare for 2017 GLVC Volleyball Tournament

(Lebanon, Ill., Nov 14) – The McKendree University women's volleyball program is set to take on the Truman State University Bulldogs in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament quarterfinals in East Peoria, IL on Friday. It will be a re-match of the 2016 GLVC championship match, which was won by the Bulldogs in three sets, and it marks the second meeting between the schools this season, as the Bearcats defeated Truman 3-2 on September 23rd.

The Bearcats are the #2 seed in the tournament, after winning the GLVC Central Division with a record of 16-2 in conference play, and finished the regular season with an overall record of 22-7. They are ranked in the GLVC top five in opponent kills (11.47 allowed per set), opponent hitting percentage (.151) and total blocks (2.31 per set as a team). Offensively, McKendree is hitting .201 as a team, averaging 12.9 kills per set.

Senior Arela Williams is fourth in the country in total kills, and is averaging 4.52 per set, having earned double-digit kills in 27 out of 29 matches. Right-side hitter Amanda Geiger is second on the team in both kills, with 439, and digs, with 397.

Junior setter Morgan Melchert has recorded over 1,000 assists on the year, and is averaging 3.13 digs per set. Sophomore Kelly Voss has transitioned into the libero position for the Bearcats, and is their leader in digs, collecting 477 for a per-set average of 4.15.

A pair of middle blockers, senior Carissa Lorenz and sophomore Megan Marks, have combined for 270 total kills. Lorenz has posted 130 total blocks (19 solo), while Marks has 113 (16 solo). Freshman outside hitter Elle Russell has compiled 140 kills and 258 digs on the season.

All matches will be held at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, and single-game tickets are $10 for adults, and $5 for students with ID, seniors (65+), and children 7-12. Children under the age of 7 get in for free.

If the Bearcats are victorious on Friday, they will then move on to face the winner between Rockhurst and Missouri St. Louis in the semifinals on Saturday at 2:30 pm.
 
 
Truman State University Bulldogs (17-14, 9-9 GLVC)
The defending GLVC tournament champions are the #7 seed, after finishing second behind Rockhurst in the GLVC West Division. The Bulldogs are the top blocking team in the conference, averaging 2.61 total blocks per set as a team, and also lead the GLVC in aces per set.

Senior outside hitter Jasmine Brown is ranked in the GLVC top ten for kills, averaging 3.21 per set, and is second on her team in digs, averaging 3.29 per set. The native of Houston, TX has also collected 68 total blocks and 31 aces. Freshman outside hitter Sam Yancy is averaging 2.49 kills per set and has recorded 221 digs.

Junior middle Natalie Brimeyer is fourth in the nation in total blocks, putting down 151. She is also hitting .304 with 244 kills on the season. Another middle for the Bulldogs, red-shirt junior Holly Hildebrand, has contributed 90 total blocks and 163 kills.

Sophomore libero Lauren Wacker is fifth in the conference in digs per set, averaging 5.31. Junior setter Savvy Hughes has posted 1,132 assists in 2017, and leads Truman with 35 aces. The Lee's Summit, MO native has also been solid on defense, compiling 326 digs.
