(OZARK, Mo., Feb. 26)—The McKendree University baseball team was defeated by host Drury University Sunday in the final game of a four-game weekend series at U.S. Baseball Park in Ozark, Mo., 5-2.
The Bearcats and Panthers were tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning before Drury put up a run in the bottom of the fifth and then added two insurance runs in the eighth inning to complete the weekend sweep of the Bearcats. McKendree is now 1-6 on the season and will make its 2017 home debut on Saturday against Hillsdale College. The Bearcats and Chargers will play a non-conference doubleheader at Hypes Field with first pitch set for noon.
Against Drury, senior outfielder
Brad Groleau (Peru, IL/St. Bede Academy) and sophomore infielder
Luke Johnson (Barrington, IL/Barrington) each collected two hits. Johnson also drove in one of the Bearcats' two runs, along with senior infielder
Cody Hall (Harrisburg, IL/Harrisburg). Junior outfielder
Hayden Bodine (Washington, IL/Washington) scored both McKendree runs in Sunday's contest with the Panthers.
Drury (6-2) built a 1-0 lead with a tally in the first inning before McKendree tied things in the top of the third. Bodine was hit by a pitch with one out before moving to second base on ground out by Johnson. Hall stepped in and delivered a two-out single up the middle to score Bodine to knot the contest at 1-1. The Panthers answered in the bottom of the third inning on a solo home run by Shane Benes -- the son of former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Andy Benes – to regain a 2-1 advantage.
McKendree pulled even in the top of the fifth inning at 2-2 by scoring an unearned run. With one out, Bodine reached second on a two-base error by Drury. Johnson came up next and ripped an RBI single to center field to plate Bodine with the tying run, helping the Bearcats draw even once again at 2-2. However, the Panthers took the lead for good with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, then added two big insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to build a three-run cushion.
Senior left-hander
Brad Henry (Godfrey, IL/Alton) was nicked for the loss on the mound for McKendree. In five innings of work, Henry allowed three earned runs on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
