Men’s Track and Field Posts Three Top-Seven Finishes at NCAA Outdoor Championships

LIVE RESULTS

(BRADENTON, Fla., May 27)—
The McKendree University men's track and field program closed the 2017 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday with a trio of All-America efforts.

Sophomore DeMontez McCray (O'Fallon, IL/O'Fallon) had a busy two-hour span for the Bearcats as he played a role in all three All-America finishes for the squad. He began the early evening flurry by running the anchor leg for the Bearcats' 4 x 100-meter relay team in the finals of the event. He teamed with senior Donovan Friscia (Jacksonville, FL/Bartram Trail), junior Kevin Witcik (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) and sophomore Tyree Allen (Country Club Hills, IL/Hillcrest) to finish fifth in the race with a time of 40.33 seconds. McKendree bettered its NCAA qualifying standard time by more than two-tenths of a second in collecting the top-five effort.

After a short break, McCray stepped back onto the track to race in the finals of the 100-meter dash. McCray netted his first individual NCAA Division II All-America honor thanks to his seventh-place finish in the race. He crossed the finish line in a time of 10.61 seconds. Just over an hour later, McCray wrapped up his hectic schedule by taking sixth place in the finals of the 200-meter dash. He registered a final time of 21.41 seconds in the event.

Thanks to his top-eight finishes in the sprint events, McCray has become the first student-athlete to garner multiple NCAA Division II All-America honors in the same meet. Overall, McKendree finished the national meet with nine total points, giving the Bearcats a 28th-place finish out of the 70 programs that scored points. This was the first time that the McKendree men's track and field program registered points at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships in its five years as Division II members.

"What a showing for our men's team," said McKendree track and field head coach Mike Mendez. "It was not quite the place we hoped for, but we had great efforts and execution by all. DeMontez is as tough as nails, making it through the 100- and 200-meters with a slight hamstring issue but still managed to bring home three All-America honors for the day. He also accomplished that while running six races over the weekend. I'm also very proud of Donovan, who graduated earlier this month. He played a crucial role on our 4 x 100-meter relay team. What a great young man who will be missed. I'm so happy he stood on the podium today. To have Kevin start off the weekend as the Elite 90 Award winner and then to bring home six trophies makes for a very proud coach."
