(LEBANON, Ill., March 22)--The McKendree University baseball team will travel to Kirksville, Mo., this weekend for a three-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series at Truman State University. The Bearcats and Bulldogs will tangle in a doubleheader on Saturday before closing out the weekend with a nine-inning affair on Sunday. First pitch both days is scheduled for 12 noon.
McKendree returns to action following an impressive conference doubleheader sweep on Wednesday at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The Bearcats put up 28 runs between the two games, posting wins of 15-4 and 13-7. McKendree raced out to leads of 13-2 and 9-2, respectively, after three innings in each contest.
Corey Chambliss (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) led the charge with eight RBI on the day, including a first-inning grand slam in the opener that jump-started the Bearcats' offense for the day.
Drew Reich (Charlestown, IN/Charlestown) drove in six runs in game one as McKendree enjoyed its most productive offensive day in a GLVC doubleheader in nearly two seasons.Â
With the sweep on Wednesday, McKendree improved to 7-12 on the year and is 4-4 in the GLVC. The Bearcats have one three of their last four league contests.Â
Bryce Emery (Harrisburg, IL/Harrisburg) continues to lead the McKendree offense with a .389 batting average.
Matt Klosterman (Belleville, IL/Belleville West)Â (.282) and
Drake Hampton (Godfrey, IL/Alton) (.267) share team-high honors with six stolen bases. Reich has taken over the team lead with four home runs, while Chambliss now has 15 runs batted in to lead all Bearcat players.Â
Seven different McKendree pitchers have registered a victory this season.
Andrew Yancik (Glen Carbon, IL/Edwardsville)Â combined with
Brian Christianson (Mokena, IL/Lincoln-Way East) and
Logan Zachry (Carlyle, IL/Carlyle) on a two-hitter in game one against UMSL.
Geoff Withers (Cottage Hills, IL/Civic Memorial) pitched five innings in the nightcap to collect his victory collegiate win on Wednesday.Â
Following the three-game series at Truman State, McKendree will return home to face UMSL in a single game on Tuesday to close out the season series. The Bearcats will then head to Romeoville, Ill., next weekend for a three-game GLVC set at Lewis University.Â
ABOUT TRUMAN STATE
The Bulldogs currently sit at 1-15 overall and 1-7 in GLVC play. Truman State's lone victory on the year was a big one as they knocked off then-No. 3 Illinois Springfield 11-10 in the conference opener for both teams back on March 10. This weekend's series against McKendree will mark the Bulldogs' home openers in 2019.Â
Mason King leads the Truman State offense with a .320 batting average. Steven Bradbury checks in at .286, while Adam Stolley is next at .263. Evan Kayser is the Bulldogs' leader in both home runs with two and RBI with seven. King and Kory Carter each top the squad with five stolen bases.Â
Caleb Buehrle paces the Truman State pitching staff with a 1-0 record and a 5.29 earned-run average. Connor McKenna has a team-leading 14 strikeouts in 17 1/3 innings of work.Â
This weekend's three-game series will mark the first time that McKendree and Truman State have met on the baseball diamond since the 2015 season. The Bearcats and Bulldogs split a four-game league series, with McKendree sweeping the first doubleheader on March 21, 2015 before Truman State returned the favor by winning both games a day later.Â
