(LEBANON, Ill., March 29)--The McKendree University heads back on the road this weekend for a Great Lakes Valley Conference series at Lewis University. The Bearcats and Flyers will meet in a doubleheader Sunday before closing out the weather-delayed series with a nine-inning contest on Monday. First pitch for both days is slated for noon.
McKendree heads north with an overall record of 9-14 and sits at 6-6 in GLVC play. The Bearcats held an early 4-1 lead at home on Tuesday against the University of Missouri-St. Louis before the Tritons rallied to grab a 6-5 victory.
Austin Werner (Hamel, IL/Edwardsville) had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a pair of homers for the Bearcats.
Drake Hampton (Godfrey, IL/Alton) also homered in the contest for McKendree.
Connor Gilles (High Ridge, MO/Rockwood Summit) allowed just four hits and one run with five strikeouts over the first five innings.
Three starters in the McKendree lineup are hitting over the .300 mark entering the Lewis series.
Bryce Emery (Harrisburg, IL/Harrisburg) leads the trio with a .382 mark, while
Hayden Schaefer (O'Fallon, IL/O'Fallon) is next at .343.
Matt Klosterman (Belleville, IL/Belleville West) rounds out the trio with a .308 average.
Drew Reich (Charlestown, IN/Charlestown) and
Corey Chambliss (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) share the team lead with 18 runs batted in, while Reich has belted a team-leading five home runs. Reich has scored a team-best 19 runs, and Hampton has not been caught in eight steal attempts.
Andrew Yancik (Glen Carbon, IL/Edwardsville) leads the Bearcats' pitching staff with two victories, while
Adam Bunnell (Salem, IL/Salem) has a team-best three saves.
ABOUT LEWIS
The Flyers enter the McKendree series with an overall record of 9-14 and a 4-8 ledger against GLVC competition. Lewis has dropped five of its last six contest, including a 7-5 setback on Thursday at Purdue University Northwest. Veteran head coach Tim McDonough is in his 12th season at the helm of the Flyers' program.
Brandon Post leads the way offensively for Lewis with a .404 batting average and three home runs. Post is also second on the squad with 15 runs batted in and is third with five stolen bases. Connor Rutherford checks in with a .302 average to go along with two homers and 13 RBI. Rutherford also paces the Flyers with seven steals on eight attempts.
Jake Lotz has recorded two victories out of the Lewis bullpen with a 2.45 earned-run average. Blake Marks, who has started six games this season for the Flyers, also has notched a pair of wins on the mound. Pete Hamot has struck out a team-leading 31 batters in 30 innings of work.
Lewis took all three games from McKendree during the 2018 season at Whitey Herzog Field in Belleville. The Flyers took a doubleheader on March 30, 2018 by scores of 4-2 and 7-2 before winning the finale 8-1 a day later.
