(QUINCY, Ill- Oct 4) - The McKendree University women's tennis team began their season with a road victory at Quincy University by a score of 6-2.
It was a strong showing for the Bearcats in both singles and doubles play, with the Bearcats capturing two wins in doubles, and four more in singles.
In doubles play, the Bearcats where led by
Viola Cipriani (Arezzo, Italy/Liceo Classico Francesco Petrarca) and
Sara Kalkenova (Astana, Kazakhstan/Zerde School No.9) claiming victory at first doubles against Laila Leist-Alston and Nicole Lao by the score 6-3. Third doubles secured the other point for the Bearcats, with the freshmen duo of
Bailey Grigg (Marine, IL/Triad High School) and
Emily Kettering (Bloomington, IL/Normal Community West High School) defeating Alexia Ginter and Jori Jay Obert by the score of 6-3.
The Bearcats kept their momentum going in singles play where freshman
Rhyan Cook (Pickerington, OH./Pickerington High School North) found success at third singles against Makaela Hampton, claiming victory by a score of 6-2, 6-1.
Mariana Caicedo Mora (Cúcuta, Colombia/American International School of Mallorca) held down the fourth singles spot, defeating Noni Updyke by a score of 6-4, 6-4.
The Bearcats finished strong, with freshmen duo
Emily Kettering (Bloomington, IL/Normal Community West High School) and
Bailey Grigg (Marine, IL/Triad High School) securing victory at fifth and sixth singles. Kettering defeated Alexia Ginter by a score of 6-1, 6-2, and
