INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - McKendree University men's soccer sophomore goalkeeper
Anthony Swenson captured his first two victories in his first two collegiate starts this past week, garnering the Great Lakes Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week award. He helped the Bearcats earn their first 2-0-0 start since 2013.
Swenson, a native of Dover, Minnesota, got his first collegiate starts to open up his sophomore season, facing two top-GMAC opponents in Ohio Dominican and No.15 Lake Erie. The week and season began on August 25 with a true road game at ODU, where McKendree claimed the win, 2-0, over the Panthers. The goalkeeper collected two saves while facing 11 attempts from the hosting-Panthers, tallying his first-ever clean sheet in the collegiate ranks. McKendree then took on the No.15 Lake Erie Storm on August 27, which ended with another Bearcats victory, 2-0. Swenson, a product of Dover-Eyota, nabbed another two saves while holding net for full time, facing seven shots from the top-ranked team in the GMAC preseason poll.
The Bearcats' starting keeper totaled four saves on 18 shots faced from the Panthers and No.15 Storm, earning his first ever collegiate clean sheets and wins (2-0-0).
Swenson is the first Bearcat to earn defensive player of the week honors since Alvaro "Pachu" Cortazar (10/21/19).
