EVANSVILLE, Ind. - McKendree University men's swimming and diving finished third out of 10 teams at the 2023 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Championships with a total of 1,423 points. Drury University claimed the title with 1,701 points, followed by Indianapolis with 1,562.
Day three and four of competition included a GLVC record-breaking performance from the 400 freestyle relay team, consisting of sophomores Alireza Yavari, Arthur Souza and seniors Caleb Law and Gregg Lichinsky (2:53.06).
Lichinsky also posted wins in the 100 freestyle (42.95) and 100 fly (46.00), clocking NCAA A-cut times in both. His sophomore teammate Jack Lustig finished third in the 100 fly, earning an A-cut time of his own (46.44).
Lustig also added to the stack of Bearcat golds with a win in the 200 fly. His time of 1:44.16 broke the previous GLVC record and secured his second NCAA A-cut.
Junior Pilipe Pinherio and Yavari snagged wins of their own in the 200 breaststroke (1:57.91) and 200 freestyle (1:36.19), respectively. Yavari was joined on the podium by Souza who touched the wall in a third-place time of 1:37.33.
McKendree men's swimming finished the meet with a total of nine conference titles and 22 'A' final swims. To close out their season, the Bearcats head to Drury for a Last Chance qualifying meet on Feb. 18 and then the NCAA-II National Championships on March 8-11 in Indianapolis, Ind.
