Women’s Tennis competes at ITA regional

Fonseca, Cipriani post wins in A flight; Cook, Salomao advance to C flight finals.

Indianapolis, Ind. - McKendree University women's tennis competed at the ITA regional event hosted by the University of Indianapolis.

"Overall, our Lady Bearcats posted the best results ever at ITA regionals. Whereas Captain Camilla Fonseca's two singles victories over 8+ UTR players was historic for McKendree Tennis, everybody on the team contributed successfully in both singles and doubles." Said Coach Vidal.

Senior Camilla Fonseca dropped her opening round match, but earned singles victories in the consolation bracket of the "A" flight with wins over two 8+ UTR (Universal Tennis Ranking) opponents representing Southwest Baptist and Michigan Tech.

Fonseca and fifth-year senior Viola Cipriani led the way in doubles, upsetting the third seed duo of Amy Bloch and Willemien Coetzee from Davenport University by the score of 6-4 in the first round of the top "A" flight advancing to the round of 16. They would then fall to a doubles team from Grand Valley State by the score of 6-2.

Junior Sofija Djunisijevic, who earned the 5th seed in the "C" flight, defeated Anna Matino from Quincy University 6-1, 6-4. She drew the 12th seed Maria Gouveia from Maryville Univeristy. Gouveia defeated her in three sets (3-6, 6-2, 10-12).

After a bye in the opening round of the "C" flight, sophomore Iva Poleksic defeated Rachel Kibler of Walsh University in straight sets by the scores of 6-2, 6-2. Poleksic would then fall in three sets to Kennedy Dumas of Ferris State (6-3, 4-6, 10-5).

Seniors Maria Vitoria Salomao, and Rhyan Cook opened up their "C" flight tournament with a 6-3 win against Cecilia Ulrich and Andrea Dabbah of Rockhurst University. In the quarterfinals, they upset the 2nd seeded team of Kibler and Chiara Wolff from Walsh University 6-2. The semifinal match against Lydia Liong and Alexis Anthes from Saginaw Valley was a clean sweep as they advanced to the "C" flight finals with the 6-0 win. Unfortunately, Cook and Salomao withdrew from the finals match.

The Bearcats next action comes this weekend Friday, Sept. 22, and Saturday, Sept. 23 at the Southwest Baptist Invitational.
