ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The McKendree Men's Bowling Team had a great showing from all three teams that competed in the Lions Classic this past weekend at St. Charles Lanes.
Saturday's qualifying slate was composed of three traditional games followed by 12 baker games. McKendree's varsity team finished the day atop the standings with a total pinfall of 5,840.
Individually, the team was led by Darren Zombro, shooting a 698 series earning him third overall and a spot on the All-Tournament team. Also securing an All-Tournament team spot was Nathan Bassford, who shot 696 earning him fifth place in the standings.
Xavier Newell found himself in the top 20 with a 619 series and a high game of 238. Coming off the bench firing was Dale Horstmann, in his two games he averaged 259.5 with a high score of 290. Brandon West also had two accredited games, averaging 187.5. Brett Maciejewski and Zach Vanderpool had one accredited game each shooting 141 and 202 respectively.
On Sunday, they won their first match against eighth-seeded Greenville 2-0. They would then face fourth-seeded Lindenwood and lose 1-2. This landed them a match against sixth-seeded Kansas State where they unfortunately lost 1-2, putting them in fourth place out of eight teams.
The Bearcats also had two junior varsity (JV) teams competing in the tournament. The JV Gold team ended qualifying in sixth with a total pinfall of 4,762. The JV White team sat third out of the nine total JV teams with a total pinfall of 5,041.
Individually for the JV Gold team, Macallan Gagne led the team with a 583 series earning him 31st out of a field of 109 competitors. Trevor Pense, Jacob Podunajec, and Keaton Gullion all had three complete games finishing with scores of 531, 530 and 506 respectively.
For the JV White team, they were led by Seth Gort and Connor Lunning who finished with scores of 649 and 646, earning them 11th and 12th overall respectively. Owen Taylor and Alex Thompson finished the day, averaging 200.3 and 176 through the three traditional games.
In bracket play on Sunday, JV Gold would go 1-2 and finish fourth. JV White would go on to make a run to the semifinals and fall to Lindenwood JV1 to finish third out of nine teams.

The McKendree Men's Bowling team will be on the road again for the Leatherneck Classic in Rockford, Illinois on November 8th and 9th at Don Carter Lanes.
