BELLEVILLE, Ill. – McKendree University women's tennis defeated Southwestern Illinois College and Maryville University in a double header on Wednesday, September 17
th, 6-1 and 5-2 respectively.
The Bearcats took on the Blue Storm, defeating them 6-1. The Bearcats swept the doubles matches, giving them the doubles point. Finishing first was no.1 duo freshman
Emmy Zsigmond and sophomore
Keira Greefs, winning their match 6-1. No. 2 match was won 6-2 by freshman
Morgyn Chambers and sophomore
Paisley Struewing. Finishing off the doubles sweep was no. 3 freshman duo
Radvile Survilaite and
Diana Calzada, taking the match 6-2.
In singles play, Greefs (Keira) played the no. 1 match, winning 6-1, 6-1. In the no. 2 spot, Zsigmond fought a tough two-hour match, coming out on top 7-6, 6-4. Struewing played in the no. 3 match, taking her opponent down 6-0, 6-1, while Chambers won the no. 4 match 6-1, 6-4. Calzada finished off the wins at the no. 5 spot, winning 6-3, 6-0. Survilaite fell in the no. 6 match 1-8.
After an hour and a half break, the Bearcats came back to compete against the Saints of Maryville University. The Bearcats came out on top, winning 5-2.
In doubles play, the Bearcats started off strong, winning one of the three doubles matches by walkover. No. 2 duo senior
Iva Poleksic and sophomore
Ivana Milkova defeated Grace Brown and Luana Luersen 6-2 to give the Bearcats the doubles point. No. 1 duo freshman
Kristina Bogomazova and senior
Lena Greefs battled for the doubles sweep but ended up falling to Nazil Saka and Isabella Alvarez 4-6.
In singles play, the Bearcats receive two wins in the no. 5 and no. 6 matches due to walkover. Greefs (Lena) had to retire in the second set, in the No. 1 match, giving the Saints their first point. Both the no. 2 and no. 3 matches went three sets, lasting roughly two hours and fifteen minutes. Bogomazova came out on top, defeating Saka 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 in the no. 2 match. In the no. 3 match, Grantham was defeated by Luersen in a tough third set tiebreak, 6-1,6-2, 6(12)-7(14). Rounding out the wins on the long day for the Bearcats was freshman
Alessia Baiardi winning 7-5, 6-3 over Brown in the no. 4 match.
