(GREENVILLE, Ill., Oct. 14)—The McKendree University volleyball team erased a two-set deficit to rally for a 3-2 match victory Friday night at Greenville College. The Bearcats pulled out the non-conference win by scores of 23-25, 25-27, 25-20, 25-18 and 15-13.
Friday's victory gives McKendree an overall record of 7-19. The Bearcats will be on the road Tuesday for a match against future Great Lakes Valley Conference foe University of Southern Indiana. The contest is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
In the win at Greenville, senior outside hitter
Kaitlyn Kollmann (Collinsville, IL/Metro East Lutheran) and freshman outside hitter
Erica Johnson (New Baden, IL/Wesclin) each connected for a team-best 12 kills. Freshman middle hitter
Hilary Richter (Troy, IL/Triad) was close behind with 11 attacks while also posting eight blocks. Senior hitter
Melinda Bayer (Collinsville, IL/Triad) notched a match-high 12 blocks (three solos) for the Bearcats. Senior setter
Melissa Bayer (Collinsville, IL/Triad) chipped in with 24 assists as freshman setter
Maggie Mueller (St. Peters, MO/Francis Howell Central) handed out 16.
Along the back row for McKendree, senior libero
Savannah Jarvis (Mascoutah, IL/Mascoutah) registered a team-best 21 digs with Johnson chipping in with 20. Jarvis also served up four aces against the Panthers.
After losing two hard-fought sets to Greenville to open the match, McKendree stormed back with a big spurt midway through the third set. The Bearcats led 9-8 before an 11-3 run built the margin to 20-12. McKendree was never threatened again in the contest to force a fourth set. The Panthers held a slim 13-12 lead before four straight points gave the Bearcats a lead they would not surrender, highlighted by an ace from Jarvis and a kill by Richter.
McKendree had to rally one more time in the fifth and deciding set. Greenville fought its way to a 13-9 lead before the Bearcats ripped off the final six points to steal the match. Laura Payne (Rockville, IN/Rockville) (Rockville, Ind./Rockville) posted an ace to even the set at 13-13. Consecutive kills from Kollmann and Johnson enabled McKendree to finish off the come-from-behind victory.
