(LEBANON, Ill., Oct. 28)—
Senior outside hitter Kaitlyn Kollmann (Collinsville, IL/Metro East Lutheran) registered 21 kills in two matches, leading the McKendree University volleyball team to three-set sweeps of Central Methodist University and Harris-Stowe State University Friday in day one action of the McKendree Invitational.
 
Kollmann (Collinsville, Ill./Metro East Lutheran) had a match-high 15 kills in the opening match versus Central Methodist, then followed with eight attacks to share team-high honors in the victory over Harris-Stowe.  The Bearcats, who were seeing their first game action in 10 days, improve to 9-20 on the year. McKendree will wrap up its own invitational Saturday with matches against Iowa Wesleyan College at noon and Saint Xavier University at 4 p.m.
 
Against Central Methodist, McKendree used a fast start and never looked back to win by scores of 25-8, 25-20 and 25-20. In the first set, the Bearcats reeled off 12 of the first 13 points and were never threatened in the contest. Kollmann had three kills during the opening spurt for McKendree. The second set started in similar fashion as McKendree won the first seven points, including three consecutive kills from senior outside hitter Nadia Moore (Cahokia, Ill./Cahokia) (Cahokia, Ill./Cahokia).
 
Central Methodist stayed close throughout the third and final set, coming within 21-19 late in the game. Consecutive attacks from freshman outside hitter Erica Johnson (New Baden, IL/Wesclin) (New Baden, Ill./Wesclin) and Kollmann ignited a match-ending 4-1 run, with an ace from senior Lauren Richter (Mascoutah, IL/Mascoutah) (Mascoutah, Ill./Mascoutah) finishing off the contest.
 
Moore added eight kills against Central Methodist, while Johnson finished with six attacks. Senior setter Melissa Bayer (Collinsville, IL/Triad) (Collinsville, Ill./Triad) handed out a match-high 28 assists. Senior hitter Melinda Bayer (Collinsville, IL/Triad) (Collinsville, Ill./Triad) had eight blocks, including four solos, and senior libero Savannah Jarvis (Mascoutah, IL/Mascoutah) (Mascoutah, Ill./Mascoutah) registered 10 digs for the Bearcats.
 
In the nightcap, McKendree faced an undermanned Harris-Stowe squad. The Bearcats made quick work of the Hornets, sweeping the contest by scores of 25-4, 25-10 and 25-9.
 
McKendree started the match by winning 10 of the first 12 points. Later in the set, the Bearcats ripped off 13 consecutive points to build a convincing 23-3 margin. Harris-Stowe battled back in the second set, pulling within 10-7 midway through the game. The Bearcats responded with a decisive 10-1 run to grab a 20-8 lead. Melissa Bayer (Collinsville, IL/Triad) and freshman middle hitter Hilary Richter (Troy, IL/Triad) (Troy, Ill./Triad) each posted a pair of service aces in the stretch for McKendree.
 
In the third set, McKendree took control quickly, started the game on a 13-3 run. The Bearcats maintained a double-digit advantage for most of the set.
 
Richter and Melinda Bayer (Collinsville, IL/Triad) each had eight kills to lead the Bearcats. Kollmann and freshman middle hitter Trina Isaak (Highland, IL/Highland) (Highland, Ill./Highland) chipped in with six kills apiece. Freshman setter Maggie Mueller (St. Peters, MO/Francis Howell Central) (St. Peters, Mo./Francis Howell Central) handed out a team-best 15 assists, while sophomore defensive specialist Melissa Conley (New Baden, IL/Wesclin) (New Baden, Ill./Wesclin) served up six aces against the Hornets.
