McKendree Volleyball Team Rolls to Non-Conference Home Sweep of Lindenwood

Lauren Apetz made her season debut with six kills and three blocks in the Bearcats' sweep of Lindenwood
Box Score (LEBANON, Ill., Oct. 1)—The McKendree University volleyball team swept its way to a non-conference victory Tuesday at home over Lindenwood University. The Bearcats took down the Lions by scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-18.

Freshman outside hitter Bailey Kampwerth (Breese, IL/Mater Dei) led the way for McKendree with nine kills, while senior outside hitter Maureen Nesbit (Belleville, IL/Althoff Catholic) chipped in with seven attacks and 15 digs. The victory pushed the Bearcats to 3-10 on the season. McKendree will hit the road for a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference matches this weekend, beginning with a Friday contest at Lewis University. First serve is set for 7 p.m.

Sophomore right-side hitter Taylor Voss (Breese, IL/Breese Central) connected for six kills and had three blocks in Tuesday's win for McKendree. Playing in her first match of the season, sophomore middle hitter Lauren Apetz (Glenwood, FL/DeLand) helped out with six kills and three blocks. Freshman setter Aubry Dickmann (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) handed out a team-best 17 assists while freshman setter Breanna Howe (Mt. Pulaski, IL/Mt. Pulaski) added 13 sets. Freshman middle hitter Sophie Fairman (Staunton, IL/Staunton) had a hand in seven blocks on the night for the Bearcats, including a pair of solos.

Lindenwood (4-11) led in the early stages of the first set before a 5-1 run helped McKendree take a 16-13 lead. A kill from Apetz helped the Bearcats stretch the margin to 23-16 on its way to the set victory. The second set was a close contest, with the largest lead for either team coming at two points. The lead changed hands eight times before McKendree scratched out to a 19-17 lead. The teams traded points the remainder of the set, with a kill from Kampwerth finishing off the contest to give the Bearcats a 2-0 lead for the night.

McKendree roared out to an 11-3 lead in the third set, which included an 8-0 run that gave the Bearcats the lead for good. Lindenwood battled back to pull within 15-11. Following a timeout, the Bearcats were able to push the lead back to six points and closed out the match on a service ace by Nesbit to finish off their first sweep of the 2013 season.

Megan Dillon led Lindenwood with eight kills, while Emma Brydels handed out a match-high 26 assists. Shannon Doyle handled a team-best 17 digs for the Lions.
