OFFICIAL GLVC RELEASE

(LEBANON, Ill., June 17)—McKendree University kicked off the Great Lakes Valley Conference Academic Awards Week in a big way on Monday.

A total of 12 teams earned Team Academic All-GLVC honors for the 2018-19 academic year, matching the Bearcats' record total from a year ago. McKendree has now boasted at least 10 Team Academic All-GLVC squads in each of the last six years. The league awards the Team Academic All-GLVC designation to varsity teams from member institutions that maintain a 3.30 grade-point average for the entire academic year.

The McKendree women's soccer team distinguished itself from the league-record 152 honorees by achieving the conference's highest team GPA for the year. The team posted a cumulative GPA of 3.79 in the fall and spring semesters.

"Our student-athletes at McKendree continue to do amazing things both athletically and academically," said Chuck Brueggemann, director of athletics at McKendree. "The fact that we placed 12 programs on the Team Academic All-GLVC list once again is further proof that they are committed to balancing their performance in the classroom and on the playing fields. This commitment stems from the leadership of our coaches, who not only prepare our student-athletes for game competition, but help them maintain the focus on the ultimate goal of receiving a college degree.  I am proud of all our high-achieving programs, and especially congratulate head coach Tim Strange and the McKendree women's soccer team for their outstanding accomplishments over the 2018-19 academic year."

Six of the 12 McKendree teams on the 2018-19 Team Academic All-GLVC list attained a GPA of 3.5 or above for the year. The women's soccer team was joined by softball (3.73), women's cross country (3.63), women's golf (3.57), women's basketball (3.55) and men's golf (3.51) over the 3.5 threshold. Women's track and field (3.47), women's swimming and diving (3.47), women's volleyball (3.44), baseball (3.36), men's soccer (3.33) and men's swimming and diving (3.31) completed the list of team academic honorees for the Bearcats in 2018-19.

The GLVC set a new league record with 10 member institutions finishing with 10 or more teams at or above the 3.30 GPA standard. The conference had the previous best of eight schools in each of the past two years after setting league marks in 2016 (seven) and 2015 (five). Maryville University and Drury University tied with 14 programs each, followed by the University of Indianapolis with 13. McKendree was matched by William Jewell College with 12 team honorees.

Of the 152 honored programs, 108 came from women's sports and 44 from the men's side. Women's soccer and volleyball were the sports with the most honors, as all 14 member institutions saw their respective squad above a 3.30 GPA. Women's track and field also posted a perfect mark as all 12 sponsored programs achieved the 3.30 standard. The 152 teams on the Team Academic All-GLVC list surpassed the previous league record set in 2017-18.
