INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - For the first time this season, McKendree University sophomore Filipe Pinheiro (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Colegio Ao Cubo) took home this week's PNC Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week award.
Pinheiro won the 100 and 200 breaststroke against the University of Missouri St. Louis on Friday, Jan. 21. Pinheiro was also a part of the 200-medley relay team that took home first place. On the relay team he swam a 25.00 split.
On Saturday, Jan. 22 Pinheiro won the 200 breaststroke while being a part of the 200-medley relay team that won against the University of Missouri. He recorded a 24.11 split in the 200-medley relay. He also set a new school record in his win in the 100-meter breaststroke as he recorded a time of 53.02.
On the women's side Marizel van Jaarsveld from the University of Indianapolis was named the PNC GLVC Women's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week. Van Jaarsveld won her third career Athlete of the Week award.
Van Jaarsveld won four events in Indianapolis's win over Cleveland State. She won the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.75 which was the second fastest time in program history. She also won the 100 freestyle (51.35), the 400 individual medley (4:20.70) and swam the third leg on the 200-medley relay team that took home first place in a time of 1:43.95.
Pinheiro and the fifth-ranked Bearcats are back in action on Feb. 9 at the GLVC Championships in Elkhart, Ind. at 10 a.m. Central.
