7-Seeded Women's Soccer Faces 2-Seed Cedarville in NCAA First Round

Bearcats look for upset and second trip beyond NCAA first round

LEBANON, Ill. - No.17 and seventh-seeded McKendree University women's soccer (13-1-5, 8-0-4 GLVC) heads out to Cedarville, Ohio for the first round of the NCAA Tournament and Midwest Regional to take on host and second-seeded Cedarville (16-3-1, 13-1 GMAC). McKendree looks to rebound after struggling in the Great Lakes Valley Conference semifinal match, which they dropped to the eventual GLVC Champion, Maryville. McKendree will attempt to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history after making their sixth-straight tournament. 

THIS SEASON
McKendree has been dominant throughout the year, owning just one loss, which came during the GLVC Tournament to the Saints in the semifinal round. The Bearcats make their sixth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance with their seventh-seed selection in the Midwest Region. McKendree also earned its first ever undefeated regular season after going 12-0-5 prior to the GLVC Tournament. 

Six individuals were selected as All-GLVC team members, led by three first teamers behind junior forward Anna Stiffler, senior defender Morgan Bova, and senior midfielder Allison Frederking. Stiffler also earned her second ever major award in the GLVC, collecting the GLVC's Offensive Player of the Year honors. 

The Bearcats have outscored opponents 34-12, firing 1.79 goals per game on 15.3 shots per game. They also own 105 earned corner kicks and sit 4-4 on penatly kicks this year. That offense is led by Stiffler, who owns 29 points with 14 goals and one assist while scoring six game-winning goals. Just behind Stiffler is junior forward Destiny Johnson, senior midfielder Elizabeth Goldstein, junior midfielder Reagan Mauch, and senior midfielder Allison Frederking, who each own three goal a piece. Johnson ranks second on the team in points with 11, as she has totaled five assists to pair with her three goals. McKendree has 11 differender goal scorers and 18 individual point-scorers.

McKendree's net has been held by All-GLVC second team selection and senior goalkeeper Abby Tucker this season. Tucker has started all 19 games with a goals allowed average of 0.64 and a save percentage along with eight shutouts and one combined shutout. She has logged 1678 minutes on the pitch and in net this campaign.


SCOUTING CEDARVILLE
Cedarville, who dropped from the GMAC Tournament to three-seed Ashland, hosts one half of the Midwest Regional and faces McKendree in the opening round. The Yellow Jacketshave out-paced opponents with a 46-14 goal advantage, scoring 2.30 per game. Cedarville has allowed more than one goal against just once in the 2022 season. Prior to the loss to Ashland, The Jackets won 13-straight matches. 

Olivia Hoffman and Megan McClish lead the Cedarville offense with 19 and 17 points. Hoffman has fired nine goals with one assist, scoring four game-winners, while McClish has dished out five assists and scored six goals in her season. 15 different player have scored for the Yellow Jackets while 18 individuals have recorded a point. 

The net has been held by Cedarville's Brooke Ackley, who started 19 of 20 games, allowed just 13 goals with 60 saves on a 0.822 save percentage. She owns six shutouts and one combined shutout.

This will be the first matchup between the Yellow Jackets and Bearcats in their histories.
