No.22 Women's Soccer Unable to Ground Hawks in Sunday Outing

Bearcats lead early, succumb late to visiting squad

Box Score LEBANON, Ill. | Leemon Field - No.22 McKendree University women's soccer (4-1-0, 0-1-0 GLVC) entered Sunday evening on a hot streak with four-straight wins to open the fall campaign, welcoming Quincy to its home turf for the first league game of the year. McKendree went up 1-0 and held the lead going into the intermission but the Hawks fired two quick goals in the second half, taking the contest 2-1 at the final horn. The Bearcats will look to get back on track with two conference road games this upcoming week, heading to Jefferson City on September 9 to battel Lincoln and to Fayette, Iowa for a match up with UIU on September 12.

McKendree expected a battle with the Hawks as the two programs go into conference play, but had the upper hand early not only being at home but scoring less than 12 minutes into the contest. The lead came to the Bearcats via unassisted score from junior forward Maddie Mauch as she collected a dish out and pushed through the collapsing defense, blasting a shot down left for the score. Mauch tallied her fifth goal in as many games with the score. McKendree and Quincy both tallied five shots with three and one on-frame but the Bearcats held the 1-0 advantage into the halftime period.

The second half kicked off and the Hawks jumped ahead to deadlock the game less than a minute in, knotting it at 1-1. Then the visitors took the lead a few minutes later, 2-1, forcing the Bearcats to push. McKendree battled through blasting shots off the crossbar repeatedly and earning a trio of late corner kicks. Despite tossing up eight second-half shots, the Bearcats were unable to connect to knot the contest back up, dropping their first game of the campaign.

Senior goalkeeper Peyton Baker grabbed four saves in the contest while holding net for full-time.
