(LEBANON, Ill., May 4)--The McKendree University baseball squad will wrap up its 2017 season this weekend with a trip north to face off against Lewis University in a four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series. The Bearcats and Flyers will meet in doubleheaders Friday and Saturday at Brennan Field with first pitch set for noon each day.
McKendree finished out the home portion of its schedule on Monday with a doubleheader split against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Due to the prolonged rain that fell last weekend in the Metro East area, the Bearcats and Rangers played the twinbill on the campus of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. After dropping an 8-7 heartbreaker in Monday's opener, McKendree bounced back to post an 8-6 triumph in the nightcap thanks to a walk-off, two-run home run from
Andrew Aydt (Wildwood, MO/Eureka). The win pushed the Bearcats' overall record to 13-30 while moving to 2-20 in GLVC action.Â
Heading into the final weekend of action for the 2017 season,
Isaac Fisher (Washington, IL/Washington) holds the McKendree team leading in batting average at .318.
Brad Groleau (Peru, IL/St. Bede Academy), who is second on the squad with a .309 average, leads the Bearcats with six home runs and 26 runs batted in.
Jeff Wetzler (Newburgh, IN/Castle) is the other McKendree starter who is hitting above the .300 mark entering this weekend's play at .302.
Luke Johnson (Barrington, IL/Barrington) paces the Bearcats with 16 walks and seven stolen bases while hitting out of the leadoff spot in the order.Â
Right-hander
Matt Wasche (Kansas City, MO/Rockhurst) leads the Bearcats' pitching staff with four victories while he sits second on the squad with two saves.
Nick Yung (Smithton, IL/Freeburg), who is second with three wins on the mound, leads the Bearcats' staff with a 4.35 earned-run average and 43 strikeouts in 49 2/3 innings of work.
Matt Henning (Wichita, KS/Bishop Carroll) has registered a team-leading five saves, which is tied for fifth in the GLVC.Â
