Bearcats Drop Final Game of Three Game Series Against Hillsdale College 16-12

(LEBANON, Ill., March 1) – The McKendree University baseball team fell to Hillsdale College in the final game of a three game series 16-12 at home Sunday afternoon. The Bearcats are now 4-7 overall on the season.

McKendree began the game in the same fashion as the first two games in the series by scoring first in the bottom of the first inning. The Bearcats sprang to an early 3-0 lead and held on to it until the Chargers evened it out with three runs of their own in the top of the third. McKendree once again took a three run lead with two runs in the bottom of the third and another in the bottom of the fourth. Hillsdale tied it up once more with three runs in the top of the fifth 6-6. The Chargers picked up momentum and the lead in the sixth inning and were able to hold on to it to win 16-12 despite late pressure by the Bearcats including a bases loaded situation in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Bearcats recorded one more hit than the Chargers, 13-12, with Hayden Schaefer (O'Fallon, IL/O'Fallon Township High School) and Bryce Emery (Harrisburg, IL/Harrisburg High School) leading McKendree with three hits each. Cal Kossina (Millstadt, IL/Belleville West High School) and Connor McCormick (Manteno, IL/Manteno High School) also recorded multiple hits on the day for the Bearcats with two each. McCormick and Schaefer were also the team RBI leaders, McCormick with four and Schaefer with three.

Seven pitchers took the mound today for the Bearcats with Andrew Yancik (Glen Carbon, IL/Edwardsville High School) starting things out. Yancik threw for 87 pitches and three strikeouts but tallied ten of the Chargers 16 runs putting him at 1-1 on the season now. Nick Beeler (Troy, IL/Triad High School) took over after Yancik throwing for just 16 pitches but collecting two strikeouts. Brian Christianson (Mattenson, IL/Lincoln-Way East High Shcool) came out next, followed by Evan Spears (Eureka, MO/Eureka High School) Andrew Hoguet (Columbia, IL/Columbia High School). Connor Gilles (High Ridge, MO/Rockwood Summit High School) was the next Bearcat to earn a strikeout and then Lucas Vallandingham (Millstadt, IL/Belleville West High School) closed out the game with two strikeouts for McKendree.

The Bearcats will be on the road next to open Great Lakes Valley Conference Competition with a three-game series against Maryville March 7-8.
