(LEBANON, Ill., April 7)--The McKendree University baseball team hits the road for the first time in Great Lakes Valley Conference play this season for a four-game weekend series at the University of Indianapolis. The Bearcats and Greyhounds will tangle in doubleaders Saturday and Sunday, with first pitch set for noon ET each day.
McKendree heads east with a 9-18 overall record after the Bearcats' 5-2 victory Tuesday afternoon at home over Maryville University. The Bearcats stopped an eight-game winless streak with the triumph. Senior
Ryan Cates (Anderson, IN/Yorktown) played a big role on the mound and at the plate in Tuesday's win. Cates scattered five hits over five innings in getting the start. His two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning broke open a close contest and staked McKendree to a 5-0 advantage. Three other pitchers joined Cates in shutting down the Saints to collect the win.
Brad Groleau (Peru, IL/St. Bede Academy) and
Colton Calhoun (Mt. Zion, IL/Mt. Zion) joined Cates with two hits on the day, while
Jeff Wetzler (Newburgh, IN/Castle) scored a pair of runs for the Bearcats.
Four starters enter the weekend hitting over the .300 mark for McKendree.
Isaac Fisher (Washington, IL/Washington) leads the way with a .338 average, while
Hayden Bodine (Washington, IL/Washington) is close behind at .333. Bodine still leads the Bearcats with 16 runs batted in on the year. Cates (.310) and
Brad Groleau (Peru, IL/St. Bede Academy) (.306) are the other McKendree players with a batting average over .300. Groleau continues to lead the Bearcats with three home runs.
Nick Yung (Smithton, IL/Freeburg) paces the McKendree pitching staff with three victories, 31 1/3 innings pitched and 30 strikeouts.
Matt Wasche (Kansas City, MO/Rockhurst) has earned both of his victories out of the Bearcats' bullpen this year. Wasche (2) and
Matt Henning (Wichita, KS/Bishop Carroll) (3) have combined to notch all five saves to date for the McKendree pitching staff.
Following the four-game set at the University of Indianapolis, McKendree will continue GLVC road play with a visit to the University of Southern Indiana April 14-15. The Bearcats will not play at Hypes Field again until Tuesday, April 18 when the University of Missouri-St. Louis travels to Lebanon for a non-conference tilt.
