INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. | Great Lakes Valley Conference - McKendree University men's soccer freshman goalkeeper
Christian Herluf earned his fourth-straight and fifth overall GLVC Defensive Player of the Week award, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. Herluf collected two more shutouts on the season while helping the Bearcats go 2-0-0 on the weekend and clinch the No.4-seed in the upcoming GLVC Championship Tournament on November 5-12. McKendree will play host to the fifth-seeded Maryville Saints in the Quarterfinal round on Sunday, November 5 at Leemon Field. The Bearcats tallied a 10-1-6 mark overall on the 2023 regular season campaign and an 8-1-4 record in the GLVC.
The freshman and Odder, Denmark-native tallied his fourth-straight defensive honors from the GLVC with his seventh and eighth-straight shutouts over the weekend. On October 27 against SBU, Herluf and the Bearcats controlled the game in all aspects, not allowing a shot and handling the opposing Bearcats with ease at 4-0. In the Sunday matchup versus Drury, Herluf faced 10 shots with one save enroute to the win. Overall on the month, Herluf and the Bearcats allowed just one goal, which came against UIndy on October 1. The Bearcats and Hounds tied 1-1 in that contest.
With his performance this season, Herluf ranks nationally and in the GLVC in multiple categories, including: goalie minutes (t-4th, NCAA), goals against average (4th, NCAA | 2nd, GLVC), save percentage (18th, NCAA | 2nd, GLVC), and total shutouts (t-2nd, NCAA | t-1st, GLVC).

The Bearcats finished tied for third in the GLVC this season with 28 points, earning the four-seed in the championship tournament following tiebreakers with UIndy. McKendree is set to host its quarterfinal matchup against Maryville on November 5 at Leemon Field. The sole matchup this fall between the Bearcats and Saints ended in a 0-0 tie while the last tournament meeting came in 2021 and led to a draw with Maryville winning via PKs, 10-9.
The 2023 GLVC Men's Soccer Championship Tournament will be held Nov. 10 and 12 at Corwin Clatt Stadium in East Peoria, Ill., after the quarterfinals on Nov. 5 are hosted by the top-four seeds. This is the first year the event will be hosted at this venue and a return to a neutral site for both the men's and women's tournaments since the spring of 2021.
