(LEBANON, Ill., June 23)—McKendree University learned on Tuesday from the Great Lakes Valley Conference that the Bearcats had a record 315 student-athletes earn GEICO Academic All-GLVC honors for 2019-20. A total of 4,014 individuals were recognized by the GLVC for their performance in the classroom this past academic year.
To be eligible for GEICO Academic All-GLVC honors, a varsity student-athlete must have a 3.3 grade-point average over the course of the two semesters of the 2019-20 academic year.
"The challenges that faced our McKendree student-athletes during the 2019-20 academic year were unprecedented, and I could not be more impressed with how they handled everything," said
Chuck Brueggemann, director of athletics at McKendree. "Not only did they meet every challenge head-on, but they did so in record-breaking fashion. The dramatic rise in the number of Academic All-GLVC recipients is proof that our student-athletes have made achieving a McKendree degree their number one priority. While we celebrate their academic success today, we also applaud our coaches and staff for standing behind our student-athletes every step of the way."
With 315 honorees named on Tuesday, McKendree shattered its previous mark of 234 GEICO Academic All-GLVC recipients which was first set during the 2016-17 academic year and matched a year later.
McKendree had student-athletes honored from all 21 GLVC-sponsored sports in which it participates. Of those 21 programs, six teams produced at least 20 GEICO Academic All-GLVC recipients in 2019-20. The Bearcats' football program led the group with 44 honorees. Women's soccer was next with 29, followed by the baseball team with 25. Men's golf and men's swimming and diving each had 23 honorees, while softball rounded out the group with 21.
Across the GLVC, the list of honorees features student-athletes from the following sports: baseball (416), men's basketball (101), women's basketball (184), women's bowling (49), men's cross country (138), women's cross country (132), football (269), men's golf (126), women's golf (109), men's lacrosse (133), women's lacrosse (115), men's soccer (311), women's soccer (368), softball (248), men's swimming and diving (158), women's swimming and diving (164), men's tennis (101), women's tennis (102), men's track and field (224), women's track and field (260), volleyball (209) and wrestling (97).
Not counting the 43 honorees from men's lacrosse associate members University of Alabama Huntsville (17), University of Montevallo (13), and Lander University (13), as well as the 18 recipients from women's bowling associate members University of Central Missouri (13) and Upper Iowa University (5), the 3,953 honorees from 16 full-time GLVC members averaged out to 247 selections per school, which shattered last season's record average of 193. Over the course of the last five years, the per-school record averages have been 151 (2014-15), 160 (2015-16), 184 (2016-17), 190 (2017-18), and 193 (2018-19).
