Charlie Jack was a four-year letterman in baseball, a three-year letterman in basketball, and a two-year letterman in football. He was captain of the 1926-27 basketball team and captain of the 1928-29 baseball team. A prolific scorer in basketball, he frequently reached the double-digit plateau in a day when there was no shot clock, no ten-second rule, and a jump-ball after every basket. He scored more points in the 1926-27 season than any other college or university player in Illinois, with the exception of the Big Ten players. That earned him the prestige of being the Little Nineteen Conference leading scorer in 1926-27 and 1927-28; during the latter season he established a McKendree single-game scoring record of 26 points. Charlie’s spectacular ball-handling and one-handed shots made him McKendree’s prize offensive tool, but he is also remembered for his strong defensive skills. In a memorable game against SIU Carbondale, Charlie shut out the visiting center completely.

In baseball he was known as McKendree’s “Bambino,” largely due to his towering drives down the right field line. Whether he played right field of center field, Jack gathered in fly balls like a vacuum cleaner, frequently after long runs that culminated in spectacular catches. Jack’s two varsity letters in football were the result of great sportsmanship, a great team attitude, and his exemplary pass-catching ability.
In 1928, Charlie began a 41-yearcareer with Herrin High School as a math teacher, football coach, and athletic director. His effort, dedication, and talent left a lasting impact on Herrin High School and all the youth he worked with there. He will long be remembered as a n inspiring leader and a good and gracious man.
