Al earned ten varsity letters; four in football, four in track, and two in basketball. He was captain of the McKendree football and basketball teams in 1946-47 and captain and co-captain of the track-and-field team in 1947-48 and 1949-50 respectively. He set all-time McKendree track-and-field records in the outdoor meets in the 120-yard high hurdles (15 seconds), 220-yard low hurdles, the high jump, and the 480-yard shuttle high hurdles relay. In indoor meets he won the 50-,60-, and 70-yard hurdles (both high and low), long jump, 300-yard dash, and high jump. At the Ozark A.A.U. Division Championships he won the gold medal in the high jump in 1948, the silver in the 220-yard low hurdles in 1949, and the bronze in the 120-yard high hurdles in 1950. In 1945, Al toured the Far and Middle East with an All-American and British amateur track and field team. Al coached basketball, football, and track and field in Jacksonville, Illinois, for 32 years. He was inducted into the Jacksonville High School Crimsons’ Hall of Fame in 1984 and the State of Illinois Track and Field Cross Country Coaches’ Hall of Fame in 1987.
